Willcom D4 WS016SH UMPC with Centrino Atom Processor

Willcom in Japan today unveil its plan to release the first UMPC in mid-June this year. The Willcom D4 UMPC has a similar design as HTC Tytn II (HTC Kaiser), which comes with a QWERTY keyboard and movable display screen.

Loaded with Windows Vista, the Willcom D4 by Sharp has a big 5-inch display screen. Although you are getting a 1024 x 600 pixel in resolution, the TFT screen is only giving you a poor 256k colors. Willcom will be the first company marketing the UMPC with the new Intel Centrino Atom processor. Their first device Willcom D4 will be powered by a 1.33GHz Atom Z520 processor.

At 470 grams and a body size of 192.3×84×25.9mm, the UMPC has integrated the Willcom’s W-Sim card so that you can make/receive phone calls and connect to wireless data connection. A seperate bluetooth handset is sold seperately to let you answering calls easily while keeping the UMPC in your bag. You can expand the memory storage space by adding a microSD card, but I bet the built in 40GB hard drive will be enough for most of the people. When available, the UMPC is expected to be sold at around $900 usd.

    A UMPC that is finally a usable computer not just a geek toy. I can not believe that it has taken so long for a clamshell UMPC but I am very glad to see one. While I would rather the screen not waste so much space and would rather it was closer to the 7″ width but still its a UMPC that I would buy. So where and when can they be purchased in the US?

    I tested this thing. Its actually not as nice as it looks. also, considering Japanese carriers offer 7.2Mbit 3G, this device is a little behind. It only connects via PHS, which can only do 200kbit…

    It feels very flimsy and that its light is not a good thing. It feels like a toy.

    I’ve read the recent reviews at Pocketables and they have not said it feels weak at all. In fact they have said it is well built, and the only flaw is the stock battery; you need the extended battery to get 4-5 hours.

    This is the only UMPC thus far with a good form factor to be a good mobile business computer. In the USA there is nothing even close to its form factor. I would not care about the wireless cell capabilities not working as the computer, wifi and form factor is enough to make it well worth the high price tag. There are millions whom would love it without the wireless but if it could load any GSM sim then this would be flying off the shelfs all over the world! Still a great UMPC!!!

    Conics.net and a few other online companies are taking orders and selling them outside of Japan!

    Pocketables.net tested the Vista performance and the D4 worked great, had no problems running 10 web pages, or 4 programs at the same time. They will be writing a complete review when they get the extended battery which is reported to provide 4-5 hours of juice.
