AT&T’s Satellite Augmented Mobile Service Provides Satellite Wireless Voice and Data Communications for Business and Government Customers
DALLAS, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ — For many people it’s crucial to stay connected wherever life takes them. Thanks to a new offer from AT&T*, it’s now easier and more convenient than ever before to have mobile coverage in remote locations or when the cellular network is unavailable.

AT&T’s new Satellite Augmented Mobile Service with the TerreStar™ GENUS™ dual-mode cellular/satellite smartphone is now available for enterprise, government and small business customers. Intended to be used primarily as an everyday mobile device, the TerreStar GENUS smartphone is an innovative dual-mode device with cellular wireless capability as the primary default mode and satellite access capability as a secondary option for voice, data and messaging.

The access to the TerreStar™ satellite network enables wireless communications coverage in remote areas for government, energy, utility, transportation and maritime users, as well as backup satellite communications capabilities for public safety agencies, first responders and disaster recovery groups.

With just one phone number and one smartphone device, users with a line of sight to the satellite will have access to expanded voice and data roaming coverage in the United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and in territorial waters. The TerreStar GENUS runs on the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system to provide rich features and functionality, including a touch screen, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth®, camera and GPS.
According to an AT&T Business Continuity Study(1) conducted earlier this year, businesses are stepping up their technology investment and efforts in disaster planning and business continuity programs despite the economy; and mobile devices are increasingly part of business continuity plans.

“We understand the importance to stay connected in remote locations and especially in emergency situations, and today’s announcement is the latest example of AT&T’s commitment to delivering the highest levels of service, quality and reliability for customers,” said Michael Antieri, President, Advanced Enterprise Mobility Solutions, AT&T Business Solutions. “With this expansion of AT&T’s innovative mobility portfolio, AT&T is helping businesses and government agencies stay connected with a single device, single support contact and single bill.”
“With advancements in satellite technology, satellite-based communications is poised to be the next standard in everyday mobile devices,” said Jeffrey Epstein, President and Chief Executive Officer of TerreStar. “We are pleased to work with AT&T to bring powerful integrated satellite-cellular solutions to market, providing customers with critical communication capabilities and a great mobile experience.”

Availability
The AT&T Satellite Augmented Mobile Service and the TerreStar GENUS is available today to enterprise, government and small business Corporate Responsibility Users. The service requires standard AT&T cellular voice and smartphone data rate plans, as well as a monthly satellite subscription feature. Usage of the satellite network for voice, data and messaging is not included in the monthly feature charge and is billed as per-minute, per-message or per-megabyte roaming charges on a customer’s AT&T Mobility service invoice.
Enterprise, government and small business users should contact their AT&T sales representative for information on availability and ordering.

Ah, we love our new releases. Especially when it comes dovetailing with a free upgrade to our current situation. Microsoft today has gone ahead and told the world that their Office 2010 suite of products have become available, and that includes the mobile version. It’s been in a public Beta since late last year, so it’s about time we’ll finally be able to get our hands on the official full release.

With Microsoft’s Office Mobile 2010, you get everything you expect: full, comprehensive versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. You can edit, save, and send items at your leisure, and do it all from a device that fits into your pocket. It also includes a mobile version of Microsoft’s OneNote, and we’ve got to admit: we love the desktop version, and can’t wait to take the mobile version for a spin.

Unfortunately, or perhaps it doesn’t matter much, this new version of Office Mobile is only for Windows Mobile 6.5 users. So, don’t expect to see this on Windows Phone 7 later this year. But, again, that probably doesn’t matter considering the Office version that they’ll be getting is already impressive enough. The download itself is available from Windows Marketplace, and it’s a free upgrade to anyone who’s got a previous version of the software already installed on their handset. So, get to it, and let us know what you think!

Press Release:

Microsoft Delivers the Future of Productivity With Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010

New products and cloud services available to businesses today.

NEW YORK – May 12, 2010 – Today, Microsoft Corp. announced the worldwide availability of Microsoft Office 2010 and Microsoft SharePoint 2010, as well as Microsoft Visio 2010 and Microsoft Project 2010, for business customers worldwide. More than 90 million businesses can now deploy the 2010 suite of products, and customers can expect to see significant productivity gains and greater return on their software investments.

“Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 define the future of productivity,” said Stephen Elop, president, Microsoft Business Division. “With the 2010 set of products, organizations will save, innovate and grow as their people benefit from working across the PC, phone and browser.”

A commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting, “The Total Economic Impact™ of Implementing Microsoft’s Integrated Office Productivity Platform,” May 2010,1 evaluated the 2010 releases of Office, SharePoint, Exchange and Office Communications Server 2007 R2. The Forrester TEI model employs four fundamental elements including costs, benefits to the entire organization, flexibility and risk. Based on the customer interviews, Forrester constructed a TEI framework for a composite organization and found the ROI to be 301 percent with a payback period of 7.4 months after deployment. The study also found that the composite organization would see more than $13 million in savings over a three-year period and on average, a savings of more than two work weeks per year.

Microsoft’s Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 beta programs were the largest ever, with three times the number of participants compared with the Office 2007 beta program. As a result, 8.6 million people are already using Office 2010 and related products. In addition, more than 1,000 partners are already building solutions for the 2010 set of products.

“We evaluated a number of competitive options in our recent technology assessment, and chose Microsoft Office 2010 as our new desktop productivity standard,” said Mark Mastrianni, manager, global technology licensing and acquisition for GE. “This platform will continue to position GE on the leading edge of technology and provide a clear road map that supports our business priorities in the coming years. Office 2010′s familiar, easy-to-use interface – coupled with its new tools that will enable better collaboration and drive improved efficiency and productivity for our employees and customers – made this selection the right decision for our company.”

Productivity Solutions Across the PC, Phone and Browser

With a familiar productivity experience across the PC, phone and browser,2 Office 2010 and related products deliver new capabilities to help people:
• Connect and collaborate with co-authoring in Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft OneNote; advanced e-mail management and calendaring capabilities in Microsoft Outlook; and the addition of the new Microsoft Outlook Social Connector, which brings communication history and social network feeds directly into Outlook.
• Work virtually anywhere with Microsoft Office Web Apps, the online companions to Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel and OneNote. Along with easy access to documents from virtually anywhere, Web Apps help preserve the look and feel of a document regardless of device, so content and format are generally preserved while moving between the PC, phone and browser. Effective today, Office Mobile 2010 will be available for free via Windows® Phone Marketplace for all Windows Mobile 6.5 phones with a previous version of Office Mobile. People using Office Mobile 2010 can perform lightweight editing of Office documents and take notes on the go. With Office Mobile, people can work with Office documents stored on their phone, attached to an e-mail, and can browse, edit, and update documents stored on a Microsoft SharePoint 2010 site. SharePoint intranet sites and communities also help people collaborate, regardless of location.
• Help bring ideas to life with video, text and image editing, new broadcast capabilities in PowerPoint, auto-previewing in Word, easy document preparation through the new Microsoft Office Backstage view, and new Sparklines in Excel for precise trend and data visualization.
• Quickly access data to make real-time decisions using the business intelligence capabilities in familiar Office applications that transform everyday work data into valuable information.

Flexible Cloud Solutions

Microsoft’s signature productivity technologies are available in the cloud, 3 offering unprecedented choice and flexibility for IT departments when purchasing and deploying solutions.

Office Web Apps will now be available to all Office volume licensing customers. In addition, customers will be able to purchase a subscription to Office Web Apps as part of Microsoft Online Services, Microsoft’s cloud-based applications.

With more than 40 million paying customers on Microsoft Online Services, businesses are embracing Microsoft’s vision for the cloud. New customers including Kraft Foods, Novartis International and Codelco, the largest mining company in the world, are choosing Microsoft Online Services for its ability to delight end users while delivering enterprise-grade capabilities, security and flexibility.

“We chose Microsoft Online Services for our collaboration applications in the cloud for our 100,000 employees around the world,” said Leon V. Schumacher, Group CIO of Novartis. “It will enable our large research and development population to better collaborate to innovate. We can trust Microsoft to provide the enterprise capabilities our company requires to further improve personal productivity and collaboration among our associates so we can focus on our core mission – improving the lives of patients worldwide.”

Developer and Partner Opportunities

SharePoint 2010 delivers the business collaboration platform for the enterprise and Internet, enabling developers to rapidly respond to business needs with custom applications and solutions.

SharePoint 2010 delivers on the promise of flexible deployment options: Use Sandboxed Solutions to limit code central processing unit time, Microsoft SQL Server execution time, and exception handling. Plus, use these same technologies to deploy custom code to SharePoint Online.

Through design integration with Visual Studio 2010, developers can use familiar application development tools to create, package and debug SharePoint solutions. It also includes rich application programming interfaces and support for Open XML, Microsoft Silverlight, Representational State Transfer (REST) and Language-Integrated Query (LINQ), which help developers build applications quickly. Developers can also build applications that connect to line-of-business data, use custom workflows, and provide business intelligence data and dashboards to an entire organization.

The SharePoint integration services opportunity for Microsoft partners and developers today is $5.6 billion and is expected to grow to $6.7 billion in 2011, according to Microsoft data.

Availability

Available today in 14 languages, over the course of the next few months, Office 2010 and related products will eventually be available in 94 languages.

Microsoft’s global launch website http://www.the2010event.com for the 2010 suite of products was built on Microsoft SharePoint 2010, reaching more than 60 countries and 26 languages worldwide. The site includes a rich set of content that will help customers choose and benefit from the 2010 products, which are available for business purchase now.

Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq “MSFT”) is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.

We’re seeing a lot of talk about software upgrades this week, aren’t we? There must be something in the air. This time around, it’s an update that’s probably been awaited more than another, and that’s a pretty bold statement. For all those HTC Touch Pro2 owners out there, rocking the device on the Now Network, your time has finally come, as Windows Mobile 6.5 is finally here for your downloading pleasure.

The update to Windows Mobile 6.5 is a much needed step forward for the Touch Pro2. While the hardware is great, the software has been severely lacking, since, well, day one. But, now that we’ve got WinMo 6.5 to add to those devices, we can finally say that the device is ready to move into the future (even if the future does, in fact, end here). What do you get when you do update your handset? You’ll get the standard improvements to HTC’s Sense User Interface, some more social network integration, and it provides a few minor bug fixes.

Your phone should look like a brand new machine when you get this update up and running. And that’s never a bad thing. If you’re a Sprint customer running around with a Touch Pro2, please let us know how the update process goes for you, and what you think of 6.5. Was it worth the wait?

When a phone gets officially released, we feel like it’s a little bit like Christmas. Even if we don’t necessarily get to wake up in the morning and find a brand new phone waiting for us under a tree, the sentiment is still there. Thankfully, March is a busy month, as today marks the release of Motorola’s upgraded CLIQ, and in just over a week, we’ll get to finally hold an HTC HD2 with a US-based wireless carrier. Like we said, March is a busy, busy month.

The Motorola CLIQ XT is the latest hardware running Motorola’s MOTOBLUR User Interface. It’s still running atop the Android mobile Operating System, with Android 1.5 (yes, yes, we know…). It’s got a 3.1-inch HVGA touchscreen with a 320×480 capacitive panel. The camera on the back is of the 5MP variety, and it’s got autofocus. This is not the device you’re looking for if you’re in the market for a high-end device; it’s meant more for a mid-range, social media intensive individual. You can pick up the device right now from T-Mobile USA stores, as well as online, for just $129.99 with a qualifying voice and data plan. Of course, we recommend you check out the review, first, before you go jump the gun.

And then, we have the heavy hitter. The HTC HD2 is a marvel in almost every way, with its considerable screens size (4.3″), the 1GHz Snapdragon processor under the hood, and the powerful Sense User Interface laid out over Windows Mobile 6.5. It’s coming with a lot of extra features, packed neatly on the device even before you pick it up, in the form of Blockbuster Mobile. The HD2, as much as we’d love to have it in our hands right now, is coming out on March 24th, so try to remain on the edge of your seat just a little bit longer, okay? You can pick it up from stores then, or order it online if you want, for just $199.99 on a new contract, with a qualifying voice and data plan.

What’s also great, is that the Swype keyboard, which allows you to trace a line from one letter to the next to spell a word, is also bundled with both devices. T-Mobile is pushing the new software keyboard, and for good reason: it’s fantastic. There’s a bit of a learning curve, but it’s definitely worth learning.

Here in the United States, Windows Mobile had been counted out by a lot of people. Companies like Motorola had even stopped making hardware until the mobile Operating System improved. And now that the Redmond, Washington-based company has shown off Windows Phone 7 Series, Windows Mobile 6.5 has begun its inexorable transition to the shadow of yesteryear. Except, it seems, in Latin America, where the OS is actually rising

The warm people over at BNAmericas had a chance to talk with Microsoft’s Latin American Director of Mobile Communications, Doug Smith, and managed to pull some very interesting things from the man’s brain. Such as, when and if Windows Phone 7 would launch in Latin America. Steve Ballmer wasn’t kidding when he said the launch of Windows Phone 7 Series would be a global launch, because Smith confirmed that his region would be getting the updated mobile Operating System at the same time as everyone else: this holiday season.

When it comes to marketshare, it’s looking like Microsoft’s only competitor in the region is Research In Motion with their BlackBerry devices. No surprise there. Smith stressed the fact that simply forgetting about Windows Mobile 6.5 is not the way to go. The company must put a lot of effort in the Operating System, up until the launch of Windows Phone 7. Numbers speak the loudest though, and Microsoft should be proud of the 26% share in Brazil, and 24% in Mexico, which was reported in an IDC paper last month. It’s good to see that even with ample anticipation for what’s to come, the current hardware and software isn’t being forgotten by the consumers, which, arguably, are the most important part.

Here we go again, folks. Just in case we couldn’t beat this issue to death any more, we’ve got another confirmation from Microsoft that the HD2, manufactured by HTC, will definitely not be getting an (official) upgrade to Windows Phone 7 Series. You’ll probably remember that the 4.3-inch screen, 1 GHz Snapdragon processor do “technically” meet Microsoft’s strict guidelines for their upcoming mobile Operating System, but it’s the buttons on the front that dash its chances.

The situation has been pretty haggard recently. Considering the HTC HD2 is set to launch on T-Mobile USA in just a matter of weeks, there were all sorts of hopes and dreams that the device would be getting an official update from Microsoft when the time came. And while it’s obvious that the device would need to be wiped, so that the Sense User Interface already on it would disappear entirely, at least it could have been done. But, thanks to Mary-Jo Foley over at ZDNet, we’ve got a reconfirmation from Microsoft that the HD2 will certainly not be getting upgraded.

The key part to take away from this: “We currently do not have plans to update the HTC HD2 to Windows Phone 7 Series.”

While we covered this likelihood before, from different angles, we’re just slightly disappointed that this lovely piece of hardware is going to be skipped over. While we understand the focus is on the future, and right now the best hope that Windows Mobile 6.5 has in surviving is with the HD2, it’s still heartbreaking to think that we won’t see Windows Phone 7 on the HD2. Though, we can take some comfort in saying that at least the standard for Windows Phone 7 Series is 3.5-inch screens and 1 GHz Snapdragon processors in one of their three chassis designs.

We know that Microsoft unveiled the next generation of Windows Phones — Windows Phone 7 Series — at Mobile World Congress 2010. Our good friends from SlashGear are at MWC and have seen plenty of the new Windows Phone 7 operating system, but they didn’t see anything about the Marketplace for it.

The images you see — one above and the other below — appear to be a redesigned Windows Marketplace for the new Windows Phone 7 series. I guess is safe to say that any applications from Windows Mobile 6.5 and under will not work on the new operating system.

This new Marketplace most likely will run independently of what you can access nowadays on Windows Mobile 6.5 and under. As you can see on the screenshots, the new Marketplace comes with some Zune inspired-looking interface where you can filter into apps, games, music, and podcasts.

Well there you have it, I do like it so far and I’m not a big fan of WinMo but the new 7 OS is looking promising. Don’t forget to let us know what you think on the comments area.
