Windows Phone reached a key milestone this week. Microsoft’s Windows Marketplace now has more than 50,000 apps. Of these, 17,276 were added in the last 90 days and 8,010 were added in the last 30 days, All About Windows Phone reports.

Though still far behind iOS and Android in terms of number of apps, it seems that Windows Phone is trying to catch up their rivals. For instance, Windows Phone just took 14 months to reach 50,000 apps, while Android took 19 months and iOS took 12 months to cross 50,000 apps mark, concludes eWeek.

We know that Microsoft unveiled the next generation of Windows Phones — Windows Phone 7 Series — at Mobile World Congress 2010. Our good friends from SlashGear are at MWC and have seen plenty of the new Windows Phone 7 operating system, but they didn’t see anything about the Marketplace for it.

The images you see — one above and the other below — appear to be a redesigned Windows Marketplace for the new Windows Phone 7 series. I guess is safe to say that any applications from Windows Mobile 6.5 and under will not work on the new operating system.

This new Marketplace most likely will run independently of what you can access nowadays on Windows Mobile 6.5 and under. As you can see on the screenshots, the new Marketplace comes with some Zune inspired-looking interface where you can filter into apps, games, music, and podcasts.

Well there you have it, I do like it so far and I’m not a big fan of WinMo but the new 7 OS is looking promising. Don’t forget to let us know what you think on the comments area.

Supporting more finger friendly control, multitouch zooming and SharePoint Workspace Mobile 2010 integration, Microsoft’s latest Office Mobile 2010 Beta is available on its Marketplace. You can test and try the beta version till April 5th 2010, which it will be disabled automatically after the expired date. The software installation will not affect your existing Office Mobile if it came pre-installed on your Windows Phone; otherwise if you have purchased the Office Mobile manually, it will be uninstalled first before the Office Mobile 2010 Beta is installed.

Top 10 benefits of Office Mobile 2010

1 Experience an intuitive, touch-friendly user interface.Office Mobile 2010 integrates with Windows Mobile 6.5 to offer an intuitive and simple experience. Use innovative gestures to touch through menus, pinch to zoom in and out of Office documents, and easily flick your way through a file to quickly navigate.

2 Stay connected from anywhere with SharePoint Workspace Mobile.Take your SharePoint files offline on your phone with SharePoint Workspace Mobile 2010, a new application in Office Mobile 2010. Browse document libraries and other lists right from your smartphone. Open documents directly from Microsoft SharePoint Server for viewing or editing in Word Mobile 2010, Excel Mobile 2010, and PowerPoint Mobile 2010, and save them directly back to the server. Best of all, you can sync documents on your smartphone with a single touch so you never miss a beat—when a document is modified on the server, the copy on your smartphone will be synced automatically.

3 Use PowerPoint Mobile as a presentation aid. When delivering a presentation, your notes are just as important as your presentation itself. Many times you don’t have the luxury of using multiple monitors—one for showing your presentation and another for viewing your notes. With PowerPoint Mobile 2010, a second monitor is always readily available. You can now connect your Windows smartphone to your PC via Bluetooth and easily view your presentation notes—your phone can even be used to advance your slides!

4 View and edit your documents with confidence.A frequent concern when working with Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files created using a desktop application on a mobile device is that the content may not look the same or data could be lost during editing. But with Office Mobile 2010, you can open Office documents created on a desktop application and view them on your smartphone with high fidelity, using Office Mobile’s exclusive Text Reflow technology. And, when you edit or add comments and save your file, rich formatting, such as tables, charts and SmartArt® graphics will be preserved. With Office Mobile 2010, you’ll get the best viewing experience adapted to your device and you can take confidence knowing your content will not be compromised.

5 Search to easily find what you’re looking for. There’s no need to take documents from your smartphone back to your computer in order to e-mail them to others. With Office Mobile, you can send documents via e-mail or save them directly back to SharePoint Server 2010 using SharePoint Workspace Mobile 2010.

6 Forget the learning curve.Enjoy a familiar formatting experience when creating or editing on your smartphone. The Office Mobile applications have many of the same formatting tools you already know and use in Office. With Office Mobile 2010, you have the richest editing experience found on any mobile device.
Essential authoring capabilities:Use bullets, numbering, and font styles in Word Mobile 2010 and OneNote Mobile 2010. And find cell formatting options in Excel Mobile 2010, such as borders, shading, and font styles—even use custom number formats.

Built-in support for images: View rich graphics across your Office Mobile documents. And, in PowerPoint Mobile 2010, SmartArt graphics are now supported.

7 Update your Excel data on the fly.Whether you’re working on your budget or updating your travel expenses, you can quickly update and instantly recalculate your Excel workbooks. And now, within Excel Mobile 2010, you can take advantage of more than 140 formulas—several previously only found on the desktop.

8 Stay organized and in sync with OneNote.Review or take notes on your phone with ease—insert voice clips, pictures, or make a quick list. It’s up to you! You can even synchronize your notes—or your entire notebook—with Microsoft OneNote 2010 on your PC using the new Windows phone device sync application, available on your PC.

9 Outlook Mobile makes managing your e-mail a snap.Outlook Mobile 2010 brings powerful and familiar concepts from Outlook 2010 on the PC straight to your Windows Mobilebased smartphone. Conversation View allows you to save time by combining related messages so they can be moved, categorized, or deleted in just a few clicks. Or, when connected to Microsoft Exchange, find people in your organization from your smartphone by searching your global address list. With Outlook Mobile, get online access to your e-mail, calendar, contacts, and tasks from anywhere, anytime.

10 Seamlessly copy and paste across applications.Content for an Office document or an e-mail can be pulled from a variety of sources—a table may be added from a document, a chart from a workbook, a graphic from a presentation, along with information from your notes or an e-mail. With the improved clipboard on your Windows smartphone, copying and pasting to and from any other application on your smartphone is simple and intuitive.

According to its blog post, Windows Mobile 6.0, 6.1 and the upcoming 6.5 will all be able to use the Windows Mobile application store. There are already tons of windows mobile applications around, it would be interesting if the MarketPlace/Activesync is able to help you to re-install all the applications you have purchased and restore the application data when you switch to another Windows phone or when you have hard reset the phone. This is one of the biggest nightmare from my experience with Windows Mobile smartphone.

In fact, we’re announcing today that by the end of 2009 Windows Marketplace will also be available to Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 devices. This means that developers will have an opportunity to reach more than 30 million Windows Mobile devices. To help those millions of business users find what they’re looking for, we’re also unveiling the Windows Marketplace Business Center; a category in Windows Marketplace that will contain mobile business applications across several common industries and line of business functions
