T-Mobile and AT&T are making a deal with Transit Wireless to get cell service under the busy New York City subways. Mainly, its to continues the city’s effort on expending the wireless connectivity. There’s multiple places in New York City such as Times Square already have the free WiFi connection. They also mention there will be more WiFi connection coming to the subway stations. Now, even carriers wanting to send cell service deep down the subway stations.

However, the connection is depending on which subway station you are located. You can just get enough signal to received quick text message and reply it. But surely, it will improve soon or later.

According to BusinessWeek:

Transit Wireless said in July it secured new financing to build the network for New York’s 277 underground subway stations. The deal rejuvenated a plan that had been delayed for about three years.

T-Mobile and AT&T has sign 10-year deals with Transit Wireless for the networks in the subway stations. But they have privilege to renew their contracts up to four times in five-year increments. There are still no official words on when the service will be available.

This is definitely a bold move from the United State’s second-largest wireless carrier. And, we’ve got to give them credit: at least they’re officially confirming that the network congestion in New York has reached a ridiculous peak, and the only way they see that can fix the situation is to offer some other means for folks to consume their data. Sure, AT&T’s network is definitely scorned in New York, but we’d rather see AT&T build up their network, instead of doing something else like offer up free WiFi.

AT&T today announced plans to set up a major WiFi hotspot near the Times Square area of New York City. The hotspot itself is located near 7th avenue, between 45th and 47th streets, and if you find yourself near it and on a smartphone with the WiFi option turned on, your phone will automatically switch over to the WiFi connection. Of course, if you don’t want to be on it, you’ll be able to disconnect. According to Mike Maus, who manages AT&T’s New York network, the addition of WiFi is due to the “very large data off-load in a venue where traditionally data would go over our old voice and data network.”

Again, we like to see that AT&T is doing something to fix the solution, and even more so that they’re acknowledging a situation is happening at all, but this just doesn’t feel like it’s a step in the right direction. Unless, of course, this is just a means to an end, where AT&T is still swiftly planning on revamping their towers, and strengthening their network. We’ll just have to keep waiting.

Have you ever been sitting in a cafe, playing around on the available WiFi network there, and had the sudden urge to just set up a chat room with everyone else in the establishment? Sounds like a good time to you? Well, Nokia agrees, and that’s why they’ve come up with Instant Community: a way to create and organize impromptu networks for chatting it up, and sharing your media.

The system is designed to make the Nokia N900 an ad-hoc WiFi connection point. From there, other devices can connect to that, in which turns them into yet another ad-hoc WiFi connection point. Basically, if there were enough people out there doing the same thing, you could potentially fill up an entire stadium with the instant chatting goodness, as each device acts as another repeater, sending the signal along.

As of right now, the initial app that’s creating all the stir of good news is one that allows for large group chatting, which also allows for users to send picture and video messages. The text-based messages would be pushed to the devices without a problem, but with the ad-hoc and multiple devices running on the Instant Community, there’s a lot of latency involved; so Nokia figured out a way to make sending those picture and video message easier: links. As of right now, Nokia’s N900 is getting all of the attention. At least, one’s running MeeGo, anyway. There’s talk that a Symbian device is running the goodness, too, so that opens up the door for quite a few Nokia-based devices out there to get in on the goodness. Unfortunately, Nokia still has a lot of room to axe this project, but we’ll hope that they greenlight it and we can get an official release date soon. Check out the video below.

If you’re on the European network O2, and you’ve got yourself an iPhone, then you’re about to get another method to get on some free WiFi hotspots. The Cloud is a WiFi provider over across the pond, and the company has launched an application for the iPhone that allows owners to find, and connect, to hotspots provided by The Cloud.

But, the best part of the whole thing is that the app is free, and so is connecting to the WiFi hotspots. Free all around, and you can never go wrong with a free app that provides you with a free service, right? Of course, The Cloud’s CEO is saying that you should jump all over this app before the World Cup kicks off, so that you can access live streams of the games while you’re not at home. That seems like a perfectly legitimate reason to us.

The app is called FastConnect, and it’s available in the App Store right now for your downloading pleasure. The real question we’re asking ourselves right now, is how Apple would take the news of this app over here in the States. After all, Apple went on a cleaning binge through their digital store earlier in the year, and applications that do what FastConnect does were on the shirking list. Very interesting indeed.

Here’s another BlackBerry device that’s getting some pictorial love. This time around, it’s the coveted specifications sheet for another highly anticipated Bold device. Oh, that’s right, this is a newly-turned Bold device. The 9650 was originally meant to be a Tour-based handset, but apparently Research In Motion figured out what made this device good enough to get the upgrade. Even if it is just a name thing. We’ve seen what the 9650 is going to look like, so now it’s time to learn what it can do.

Curiously, it looks like this leaked document is actually cut-off at the bottom, as there seems to be a few pieces of integral information missing from the whole thing. For instance, what we know to be added WiFi support and optical trackpad isn’t listed here, and oddly enough, neither is the available memory in the 9650. These are the types of things people want to see, so we’ll have to keep assuming that they weren’t left off on purpose, and there’s more of this document somewhere out there.

Features wise, we’re looking at a 3G capable handset, a 3.2MP camera on the back, GPRS/UMTS, GSM Quad Band 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, a 2.4-inch TFT LCD display, and finally Bluetooth support. Obviously you’re getting the full QWERTY keyboard that we’ve seen before as well. We’re hoping that we get to see the official documents again, where WiFi and that optical trackpad are supported this time around, because if not, we’ll have to go ahead and unofficially demote this handset back to the Tour name, and we don’t think anyone wants that.

Research In Motion must see the BlackBerry Bold 9700 as the most customizable phone in existence, because every time we’ve seen it lately, it keeps getting these strange aesthetic alterations. Not that we’re complaining, especially with skins like this, but eventually it’s got to confuse the masses, right? In any event, a new version is heading to T-Mobile USA soon, and it’s coming in white.

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 in white is a 3G capable handset, and it features WiFi, GPS, MicroSD card support, and that optical trackpad that’s becoming oh so popular nowadays. Other than the white color scheme, there isn’t a thing different about this version of the 9700, but we can’t say that’s a bad thing. Options, even if it is just a color switch, is always good.

As the title suggests, and the huge T-Mobile endorsed picture confirms, the 9700 will hit store shelves on May 5th. You’ll probably be able to just walk in and pick one up come the big day; we don’t expect this to have the same sales as another device on the same network. We can’t help but think that there’s going to be at least a few BlackBerry fans out there that would love the change of pace, from black to white, and might scrape up the money to pick this bad boy up. No official word on pricing, though.
