The first implementations of Truphone Local Anywhere will be available in the second half of 2009.

As well as being able to make low-cost international voice calls, Truphone customers can also easily Instant Message their friends across a variety of networks including MSN, Yahoo!, Google Talk and Twitter from within one Android application. Customers can also call friends anywhere in the world on Google Talk for the price of a local call, and similarly will soon will be able to Instant Message and call their friends on Skype.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for people to have conversations with their communities around the world in whatever form they choose,” said Truphone CEO Geraldine Wilson.

She continued: “We passionately believe in devices like the Android and iPhone which offer easy user access to applications through the Android Market and the App Store. The G1 and the entire Android platform is an obvious and important distribution channel for us.”

Truphone is now available on Android, the Apple iPhone, the Apple iPod touch, Blackberry and Nokia devices.

Truphone also announced the availability of well full two-way instant messaging over MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk on the iPhone, which would be available on the week of January 12th. Customers can also make and receive voice calls on Google Talk; calling functionality will be added to MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger in the coming weeks.

Truphone Anywhere works in 33 countries worldwide. “There’s no GSM business tariff that gets close to the prices we can offer BlackBerry users with Truphone for international calling,” said Geraldine Wilson, new CEO of Truphone.

When an international number is dialled, the Truphone software detects what is happening and takes over automatically. Truphone Anywhere will then make a domestic call to local Truphone server and sends to the server the international number being called. The Truphone server then makes an internet call to that number and connects that long-distance internet call with the domestic call
the customer pays only for the call to the local Truphone server. Other than your local minutes, Truphone will charge for the cost of making internet calls, which is said to be as little as £0.03/minute [US$0.06/min] to call any regular landline in more than 40 countries

in some instances, such as when using Truphone Anywhere abroad, the handset sends an initial SMS to the Truphone server instead of calling it. The Truphone server then calls back to the handset and simultaneously makes an internet call to the called party, connecting the calls together at Truphone’s server; however this all remains transparent to the mobile user.

James Tagg, Truphone’s chief executive officer, said: “The days of having to pay through the nose to make international calls are no longer just numbered, they are gone; international calls from mobile phones are easier and more affordable than ever. People can now make a Truphone call globally and the cost will be close to that of a local call, even if they’re not in Wi-Fi.
