While carriers here in the States continue to dance around the idea of releasing their own variations of Research In Motion’s (RIM) BlackBerry Pearl 3G, carriers around the world don’t seem to have a problem with it at all. This time around, we’ve got Telstra in the down under, and it’s pretty much everything you would assume from the phone we know so well.

As of right now, the phone isn’t available, but it will be tomorrow. Well, maybe it is, considering today is tomorrow over there (we’re only kind of joking about this). In any event, it has all the same features we’ve talked about before: full QWERTY SureType keyboard, 3G capabilities, and it’s the smallest full-featured BlackBerry device from the company based in Waterloo so far.

You also get integrated WiFi b/g/n, GPS, and a 3.2MP camera on the back. You can pick it up for free if you choose the $59 Cap Plan, and a new two-year contract (which puts the minimum cost of the plan at $1,416 as Telstra is so nice to point out). Or, if you’re down for spending pretty much half the cost, you can buy it out-right for $679. Full press release down below.

Press Release:

Telstra and RIM Launch the New BlackBerry Pearl 3G Smartphone in Australia

Sydney, 24 May 2010 – Telstra and Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today debuted the new BlackBerry® PearlTM 3G, the smallest BlackBerry® smartphone yet.
It also makes for the perfect businesses companion providing secure access to email and other business functions in a compact format,” Mr Fielding said.

The new BlackBerry Pearl 3G measures less than 50 mm wide and weighs only 93grams, yet supports high-speed 3G and Wi-Fi® (b/g/n) networks, includes GPS and incorporates a powerhouse processor that drives visually stunning images on the sharp, high-resolution display. It also features an optical trackpad for smooth navigation, dedicated volume and media keys for added convenience, a 3.2 MP camera with flash for quality pictures on the go, and support for up to 32 GB of personal content via a microSD/SDHC memory card.

In collaboration with Telstra, Qualcomm, and Ericsson, Sierra Wireless is developing the first wireless data devices for the HSPA+ standard, which offer peak download speeds of 21 megabits per second (Mbps) over Telstra’s super-fast Next G network – three times faster than currently available HSPA modems. Shipments for customer trials are expected to begin in coming months, with a commercial launch to follow.

HSPA+ is also known as HSPA Evolution or Evolved HSPA (eHSPA). In addition to significantly increasing data speeds, the standard reduces latency, boosts network capacity, and provides an enhanced user experience. Telstra recently confirmed it is on track to begin rolling out the new technology to the Next G wireless network by the end of this year.

“HSPA+ technology will provide a remarkable improvement in how people experience mobile broadband, and once again opens the door for new, higher bandwidth applications,” said Jim Kirkpatrick, Chief Technology Officer for Sierra Wireless. “Telstra has shown tremendous industry leadership in delivering leading mobile broadband technology first in the world, and we are thrilled to work with other key industry leaders like Qualcomm and Ericsson to support this initiative.”

Marking the second anniversary of the opening of its Next G HSDPA network, Telstra is on schedule to deploy the Enhanced HSPA (eHSPA) to the Next G wireless network. Once the upgrading is completed, Telstra network will be able to offer a peak downlink speeds of 21Mbps by the end of the year to its Australia customers.

Mike Wright, Executive Director Telstra Wireless, attended the world’s first live demonstration of the eHSPA interoperability at Ericsson headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden. “This is truly game-changing. Telstra has a proven history of investment in Australia’s nation-wide, HSPA-enabled Next G network and this is our latest, very important step toward realising this technology,” Mr Wright said. “Practically speaking, our tests have shown that when combined with our planned rollout of Ethernet backhaul, this network will deliver truly high-speed connectivity on the move.”

Telstra’s Next G wireless network, which was turned on October 6, 2006, is covering 99 per cent of the Australian population. eHSPA, also known as HSPA Evolution or HSPA+, is designed to enhance the mobile broadband user experience and enable a wide range of services. The interoperability test was performed on a wireless infrastructure network solution from Ericsson using Qualcomm’s MDM8200 product.

“The peak speeds and network efficiency enabled by this evolution will encourage the development of more innovative applications and, importantly, increase our network capacity to support the explosion we are experiencing in wireless internet use,” added Mr Wright.
