Qualcomm today announced that it is sampling the industry’s first chipsets for dual-carrier HSPA+ and multi-mode 3G/LTE. The Mobile Data Modem (MDM) MDM8220 solution is the first chipset to support Dual-carrier High-Speed Packet Access Plus (DC-HSPA+); and the MDM9200 and the MDM9600 chipsets are the multi-mode 3G/Long Term Evolution (LTE) solutions. Interoperability testing with infrastructure partners is already underway with multiple field trials scheduled for the first half of next year. Commercial launches of data-centric devices based on Qualcomm’s MDM solutions are expected to begin during the second half of 2010.

“Qualcomm leads the industry in enabling next-generation mobile experiences with highly integrated, powerful and elegant solutions for dual-carrier HSPA+ and LTE. We are pleased to be working with so many industry leaders to bring these advanced technologies to market,” said Alex Katouzian, vice president of product management, Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. “We remain committed to CDMA and OFDMA WAN modem leadership and the seamless and cost-effective commercialization of next-generation technologies around the world.”

Qualcomm is working with numerous network operators, infrastructure vendors and device manufacturers with its dual-carrier HSPA+ and/or LTE solutions. Among multiple network operators evaluating the new technologies are Japan’s EMOBILE Ltd. and Telstra Wireless. Qualcomm is also working with multiple infrastructure vendors, such as Huawei Technologies and Nokia Siemens Networks, to perform interoperability tests for dual-carrier HSPA+ and LTE. Among the many device manufacturers currently evaluating the new chipsets are Huawei, LG Electronics, Novatel Wireless, Sierra Wireless and ZTE.

Qualcomm’s MDM8220 dual-carrier HSPA+ solution, based on the 3GPP Release 8 standard, provides peak downlink data rates of up to 42 megabits per second (Mbps) and 11 Mbps on the uplink, allowing carriers to easily upgrade their existing infrastructure equipment to achieve significantly higher bandwidths. Its dual-carrier technology doubles networks’ bandwidth from 5 MHz to 10 MHz by aggregating two HSPA carriers in parallel.

The MDM9200 and the MDM9600 chipsets are the industry’s first multi-mode 3G/LTE solutions that allow UMTS and CDMA2000® operators to upgrade seamlessly to future LTE services while preserving backward compatibility to their existing 3G networks. MDM9200 supports UMTS, HSPA+ and LTE, while the MDM9600 supports CDMA2000® 1X, EV-DO Rev. B, SV-DO, SV-LTE, UMTS, HSPA+ and LTE. All of the new chipsets support FDD LTE and TDD LTE modes and different carrier bandwidths, and are capable of using orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) and multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) antenna technology to support peak data rates of up to 100 Mbps on the downlink and 50 Mbps on the uplink.

Qualcomm today announced the expansion of its Plaza suite of solutions to include Plaza Retail. The goal of Plaza Retail is to allow application retailers (typically mobile operators) to present subscribers with a uniform and easy shopping experience on any capable device. Plaza Retail also gives publishers and developers the ability to make their content available to multiple retailers instantly, regardless of their development platform.

“Consumer expectation is defining the market for mobile content, and in order to remain competitive and contain costs as complexity increases, operators and device manufacturers will need to deliver more than just an application store,” said Arvin Chander, vice president and general manager of Plaza Retail. “Success in this market will be dictated by delivering mobile retail experiences across multiple platforms and networks, backed by a healthy ecosystem of publishers with an automated, transparent supply chain.”

Plaza Retail consists of three elements:

Management Center – A content merchandizing system that will support Java, BREW, Flash and BlackBerry with planned support for Android, Windows Mobile, Palm, Symbian and LiMo. Management Center allows for managing pricing, licensing, packaging, promotions, placement, segmentation, personalization, delivery and analytics in a unified manner across multiple platforms.

Storefront – A multi-platform client, Web, or mobile Web (WAP) storefront built on Web standards and a storefront management portal that enables retailers to easily update their store layout, promotions and micro-stores, thereby enhancing merchandising effectiveness and driving a common branding and user experience across their entire device lineup.

The Plaza suite also includes Plaza Mobile Internet, an end-to-end widget platform that offers operators and publishers an open framework for the development, support, management and monetization of Internet-based content on a variety of handsets.

HTC and Toshiba are among more than a dozen device makers that have signed up with Qualcomm to develop mobile computing devices using Snapdragon solutions. Those device makers also include Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Acer, Asustek Computer, Quanta Computer, Compal Electronics, Wistron, Inventec and Foxconn International Holdings (FIH).

The latest Touch HD and iPhone killer? Toshiba has announced their new TG01 smartphone, running Windows Mobile 6.1 and featuring a big 4.1-inch WVGA touchscreen (800 x 480 pixels), microSD card slot, HSPA, WiFi, GPS and customize Toshiba’s own user interface. The Toshiba TG01 is also one of the first smartphone to use the new Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon QSD2850 chipset. Acccording to SlashGear, the new user interface is finger friendly and designed for one-handed use. Shake control has been integrated by default to pick up incoming calls and other customization settings.

Unlike the Touch HD, Toshiba TG01 has two touch button, Home and Back, available below the touch screen. It also has an unique virtual trackpad to be used for page navigation. While it has a bigger 4.1-inch touchscreen compare to Touch HD’s 3.8-inch, Toshiba has magically managed to slim down the thickness further to just 9.9mm. Would this affect its battery life performance? There is no words on whether user can change the battery easily. Detail specifications are not available at the moment, check out more Toshiba TG01 official photos at next page.
