Do you like to travel? Are you fond of traveling to places you’ve never been to? If you’ve done it a few times, then you have probably run into a couple hotel-related situations throughout your travels. Whether you’ve been unable to find them, or book them once you did find them, sometimes you just wish you had an easier way to get it all done from one spot. Well, now you do, if you’ve got a Nokia device that can run Ovi Maps.

The new feature, which was implemented today thanks to an update to Maps. It’s a location-aware booking feature, which gives users the ability to search for hotels around them, and if the hotel allows it, to book a room right then and there. Thanks to Expedia, Nokia can bring this hotel-room-booking feature to Ovi Maps in the United States and United Kingdom. (The feature is already supported in Germany and Finland.)

Unfortunately, you’ll have to have one of the following devices to be running Ovi Maps v3.04, so pay close attention: Nokia E72, Nokia E55, Nokia E52, Nokia N97 mini Gold Edition, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia N97, Nokia N86 8MP, Nokia X6 32GB, Nokia X6 16GB, Nokia C5, Nokia 6730 classic, Nokia 6720 classic, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, Nokia 5235 Comes With Music and Nokia 5230. We wouldn’t want you to head out without this feature, just because your device doesn’t support it.

It’s been awhile since the N97, or the miniature variation for that matter, so we’re glad to pop up again. This time around, it’s launching up in the Great North, courtesy of Rogers Wireless. As far as we can tell, it’s coming only in black, so that means if you’re looking for the white version, you may be out of luck. That could change in the future, though. As for pricing, there’s not many surprises here, so check below for the full details.

Rogers is positioning the device as a phone that helps you get things done, while having fun doing it. It comes with the obvious goodies: you get full access to the OVI Store, which will get you ringtones, wallpapers, games, and applications for your device. It will also come with OVI Maps pre-loaded (and a car dock as an included accessory, apparently), so you can use your new phone as a stand-alone GPS unit when you need it.

As for pricing, you’ll be looking at $99.99 with a new, three-year contract. This, according to Rogers, is just a promotional plan, though, and you will need to sign up for a $45 monthly voice and data plan to get it. For a two-year contract? You’ll need to drop $399.99. While a one year will see you spending $449.99, and without a contract you’ll drop $499.99. Anyone out there thinking about picking up the N97 Mini?

You’ve got to love it when huge companies come together to build up something incredible, right? Even when it’s two companies that you wouldn’t necessarily think would work together. Mostly because Nokia’s OVI services are pretty good (and that’s an understatement) in of themselves. But apparently the CEOs of both companies figured they could do a lot better working together, and that’s exactly what’s happening.

The collaboration deal will see a large collection of Nokia’s services fused, and in some cases replaced with, Yahoo! services. For example, Yahoo! Maps is going to be “powered by” OVI, and Nokia’s devices will be the sole proprietary handsets providing Yahoo! Maps around the world.

And then you’ve got OVI services like Mail and Chat are now going to be “powered by” Yahoo!. You’ll be able to log into all of the services from one location, using OVI ID, which should hopefully make it easier for everyone wanting to use the services. (And no, you don’t get a choice.) The first markets to get the services will be getting them in the second half of this year, and it will rolled out gradually over the course of 2011.

Press Release:

Global strategic alliance enables industry leaders to leverage strengths in e-mail, instant messaging, maps and navigation across PC and mobile devices

New York, NY, USA – Today, Yahoo! and Nokia announced a worldwide strategic alliance to extend the reach of their industry leading online services and offer people rich experiences that keep them connected to their world and the world around them.
Building on more than five years of collaboration, Nokia and Yahoo! ® will leverage each others’ strengths in e-mail, instant messaging and maps and navigation services, to provide consumers with access to world-class experiences on both PC and mobile devices.
As part of the alliance:

- Nokia will be the exclusive, global provider of Yahoo!’s maps and navigation services, integrating Ovi Maps across Yahoo! properties, branded as “powered by Ovi.”

- Yahoo! will become the exclusive, global provider of Nokia’s Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services branded as “Ovi Mail / Ovi Chat powered by Yahoo!”

- Nokia and Yahoo! plan to work on ID federation between their services, beginning by making it easy for people to use their Ovi user IDs across select Yahoo! properties to easily access the online content and services they need.

“Delivering great user experiences — both online and on your mobile – is what this alliance is all about,” said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO, Nokia. “We’re enabling millions of Yahoo! customers in key markets including North America to discover the unique capabilities that Ovi Maps brings.

Similarly, Yahoo!’s online expertise will bring exciting mail and messaging enhancements to millions of Ovi Mail customers across almost every country around the world, many of whom will have their first Internet experience on their mobile.”
“What a combination,” said Carol Bartz, CEO, Yahoo!. “We’re excited to expand the reach of our best-in-class Mail and Messenger services, bringing personalized experiences to more people across the mobile web, particularly in emerging markets where we are seeding the next generation of Yahoo! users. At the same time, we believe Nokia’s strength and continued investment in maps and navigation will greatly enhance our existing products, enabling us to focus on areas that are core to our business.”

Together, Yahoo! and Nokia will continue to deliver compelling Internet experiences that address the core needs of consumers, developers, operators and advertisers. The companies will utilize their respective global distribution advantages and brand recognition across consumer audiences.

Select, co-branded service offerings are expected to become available from the second half of 2010, with global availability expected in 2011.

Nokia is the world’s largest mobile device manufacturer, with hundreds of millions of devices sold each year and a leader in digital mapping, with continuing investment and innovation focused on developing comprehensive digital mapping and navigation services, now covering 77 countries in 46 languages. With more than 600 million users of Yahoo!-branded sites per month, Yahoo! is a global Internet powerhouse, a one-stop web destination enabling consumers to enjoy their online life anywhere and everywhere – all customized for their interests. As one of the leading Internet brands, Yahoo! is focused on growing its audience by providing seamless web experiences across PC and mobile devices.

Nokia’s Music Store hasn’t been on the radar lately, and that could be seen as a good thing or bad thing. For a lot of Nokia fans out there, the Music Store is an integral part of their daily routine, especially those with devices that “Comes With Music.” But, it seems that Nokia is ready for a change, and so they’ve put in place the gradual alteration of the Music Store into becoming Ovi Music.

According to Nokia UK & Ireland’s Head of Communication, Anna Shipley, Nokia’s Music Store is now known as Ovi Music. The upgrade to Ovi Music will take place over the first half of 2010, essentially upgrading countries that are currently using Nokia Music Store as their digital storefront. There isn’t any specific timing for any particular countries, but Nokia has confirmed that the change will be automatic, so users shouldn’t have to do anything to make it happen.

This isn’t that big of a surprise, as the Ovi moniker has become a staple to the company. Rebranding other products, like Maps, took place earlier in the year (it also ushered in the usage of free Ovi Maps for life). So, it looks like Nokia will continue to use Comes With Music for their device launches, but the change is coming solely in the name change of the music store itself. Hopefully this doesn’t upset your entire weekend.

In an online event later today Nokia will demonstrate the new personal information management (PIM) sync functionality of Ovi.com, as well as the recently launched Nokia Ovi Suite for PC and the Files on Ovi remote-access service. These different elements of Ovi help you manage your personal information and media in various ways through a simple and unified interface.

The latest version of Ovi.com, which is now available as a public beta, offers free functionality for syncing your calendar, contacts, notes and tasks between a Nokia mobile device and www.ovi.com. With this functionality Ovi.com users can now create an online backup of their important information that they can access and edit anytime when connected to the internet.

With the Nokia Ovi Suite for PC application you can easily copy files and information from your Nokia mobile device to your computer; back up the contents of your Nokia device; and drag-and-drop photos and videos to Share on Ovi, the media sharing service Nokia launched earlier this year.

Files on Ovi allows you to remotely access the files on your internet-connected personal computers from any browser-enabled mobile phone or computer. You can also store files online in your Anytime Files personal storage area so that they are always accessible to you. The service is based on the software and expertise Nokia obtained through the acquisition of Avvenu in December 2007.

To participate in the online event go to: http://events.nokia.com

The event will open at 15:00 CET on Tuesday, September 9. There will be a live question and answer session with Ovi product managers from approximately 15:10 to 16:00. A similar question and answer session will be held from 07:10 CET on Wednesday, September 10.
