Looking to add video functionality to mobile phones and other consumer electronic devices, Sorenson Media today announced a significant expansion of its Sorenson Spark licensing program. As part of its announcement, Sorenson Media named new licensing partners for its Sorenson Spark video decoder. Ittiam and NXP Semiconductors are among the latest companies to license Sorenson Spark from Sorenson Media - joining Qualcomm, Verizon, Sony, YouTube and numerous others.

“The Sorenson Spark decoder has become ubiquitous in the embedded space,” said Shantanu Jha, vice president media processing at Ittiam Systems. “Because of this, we saw a critical need to enable Sorenson Spark video decoding on our vast multimedia application array.”

Sorenson Media’s Sorenson Spark Software Developers Kit (SDK) enables developers to integrate the Sorenson Spark decoder into a wide array of programmable chipsets and semiconductors. The SDK is designed to provide Sorenson Spark decoding on any platform, including custom silicon.

Consumers will benefit from an enhanced user experience as next-generation mobile devices deliver ultra-fast Internet browsing, streaming video services, multi-player gaming and even full length HD films.

“Multimedia content sharing and Web 2.0 services will be the drivers for next-generation handsets and a new breed of connected consumer electronics,” according to Dan Rabinovitsj, senior VP & GM of cellular business at NXP Semiconductors. “The PNX6910 will provide consumers with the data services and experiences they are used to from the Internet, while they are on-the-go.”

LTE represents the exciting future of next-generation broadband mobility for consumers, building on the success story of GSM – widely deployed all over the world. The PNX6910’s software programmable vector processor enables multi-mode capability and supports the entire GSM family of standards, including LTE TDD for China, which paves the way for truly global roaming.
