Everything inside the device pretty much the same. Its only the outer side of the device that change. It has this bright crimson color with Ferrari logo on it.

And yet, the Motorola DROID’s update to 2.1 is nowhere to be found. Never mind that the Milestone came out after the DROID, because it looks like the European cousin of the Verizon Wireless handset has gone ahead and moved on to the Over-the-Air (OTA) updates that we all know and love. What’s that mean? Basically, it’s no longer stuck in just Hong Kong or Macau regions, and you don’t have to download anything. The update should just roll-out to your device when it’s good and ready.

Users are reporting that they have been given prompts that the update is available to launch. It’s somewhere in the ballpark of 148MB to download, but shouldn’t take too long to download (as long as you’re on WiFi). The update is bringing the coveted Live Wallpapers to the Milestone, along with the nine home panels, some new applications, and Motorola’s Car Home interface, which is specifically designed for usage while in the car. We’re going to have to assume that doesn’t mean you should use it while you’re driving, though. So . . . Don’t.

There isn’t any telling how long it will take to roll out over the other European countries, but the updates seem to be coming in at a steady clip. Where does Canada fit into all of this? We wish we knew. Hopefully someone up in the North will let us know if they’re starting to see the update roll out to them, or if their carriers are being a bit more stingy with the goodness. If you’ve got the official update from Motorola, please let us know what you think.

Getting an update to your device, especially one that has so many improvements and classy alterations, is like Christmas every time it happens. For some devices, it may happen more than once in a year, and for others (at least of any kind of magnitude), not so much. Android though, they’ve got this upgrade thing down, and have been pumping out an update one after another since the mobile Operating Systems launch. The next big thing? Android 2.1. It was announced with the Nexus One (which has been mentioned a few times this week, yeah?), and ever since people with previously released Android-powered devices have been clamoring for the software upgrade.

Just to be frank, the Motorola Droid (which is running here in the States, on the Verizon Wireless network) is currently running Android 2.0.1, but that’s not good enough. Folks with the device want the latest and greatest, especially when it has things like Live Wallpapers, or an application drawer that rotates like a toilet paper roll. They want those things. Unfortunately for those waiting for an upgrade, they are slow. They’re happening, it just takes some time. However, we do have a bit of a glimmer of hope, at least for those in the European region (which means MILESTONE owners, and not Droid adopters). On March 20th, Mobile Bulgaria has it that Vivacom (the region’s largest wireless carrier) will be offering up their own version of the Motorola MILESTONE, Android 2.1 and all.

So, what’s that mean for the rest of Europe (and Canada, by default)? We honestly don’t know. We’d love to tell you that Android 2.1 is now definitely confirmed for an end-of-March release, but we just can’t. Yes, Motorola and Google may be using Vivacom to usher in the new 2.1 update for MILESTONE users, but that’d be a long-shot, we imagine. Though, considering the mishaps that Motorola had regarding an update to 2.1 earlier in the year, we can’t imagine there’s much more time between 2.1 and DROID/MILESTONE users. Just have to hold on for a little bit longer.

Although there is no different on the hardware specs and design, Mobile Review’s Eldar Murtazin has spotted some changes on the built in software. First the Motorola Milestone has got mutitouch support while the US version Motorola Droid do not have this activated. You can use the multitouch for zooming in web browser and photo viewer. Secondly the Google Maps Navigation will not be supported in Motorola Milestone. Motorola will pre-install its own MOTONAV software for turn-by-turn navigation and it will only be available for 60-days trial.

You can expect to see the official Motorola Milestone announcement soon. Mean while check out the hands on video by Eldar Murtazin below
