Truphone today launched Truphone 3.0, a major new upgrade to its mobile VoIP application for the Apple iPhone. Using Truphone’s integrated messaging tool that unifies all IM communities in a single place, users can now simply manage all their IM communication from a single page within the application, eliminating the need to constantly jockey between different applications or even different pages within an application. IM services currently supported include Skype, MSN Messenger, AIM, Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk.

“Customers tell us they want three things: simplicity, quality and a good deal. Those principles drive our innovation, and Truphone 3.0 delivers on all three. We’ve dramatically improved our UI and account management tools. We’ve eliminated the need for compression by utilizing new advances in signal processing, making calls crystal clear. And, just as we always do, Truphone 3.0 sets a new benchmark in terms of quality and performance that competitors will have a tough time matching”, said Geraldine Wilson, CEO Truphone.

Treating all phone calls as data packet, the company routes all phone calls with its proprietary VoIP system, which requires a software to be installed on the phone to handle a secure connection between the phone and Zer01 backend servers. As a result, Zer01 Mobile will initially be available on Windows Mobile smartphones, however support for other devices such as Blackberry, Android and iPhone will be available within months.

As expected, Skype has slowly rolled out its new iPhone application and you can now see the application listed on iPhone application store in Japan and US. The free application has a version number v1.0.0.63 and is free to download. The Skype application works only with WiFi connection, supports SkypeOut, Skype-to-Skype and SkypeIn VoIP calls.

The application delivers core Skype capabilities including:

Free Skype-to-Skype calls from any Wi-Fi zone to other Skype users worldwide

Call landline or mobile phones at Skype’s calling rates from any Wi-Fi zone

Send/receive instant messages to/from individuals or groups via 3G, Wi-Fi, GPRS or EDGE (whichever is available)

Receive calls to a personal online number on Skype

See when Skype contacts are online/available to IM or talk

Skype for iPhone requires a Wi-Fi connection to make free Skype-to-Skype calls or low-cost Skype calls to mobiles and landlines. Users will not be charged by Skype for making and receiving Skype-to-Skype calls using an iPhone or iPod touch. Skype’s normal low rates apply if using Skype to call landlines or mobiles.

Profile pictures of other users in a Skype Contacts list are also visible, making it easy to identify them. In addition, users can update their own Skype profile picture from within the Skype for iPhone app, either by choosing an existing image from a photo album on the device, or by using the camera on the iPhone to take a new photo.

“Until now, the only way to avoid the massive cost of mobile roaming is to carry multiple phones and multiple SIM cards, one for each country you frequent,” stated Truphone CEO Geraldine Wilson. “This means juggling multiple devices and phone numbers to avoid paying the high roaming rates traditionally associated with travel.
