INQ Mobile has introduced two new 3G Social Mobiles complete with internet-based Twitter, Facebook, IM and media sync capabilities. The INQ Chat 3G is the company’s first qwerty-style phone, while the compact INQ Mini 3G expands the range and provides an entry-level social mobile ideal for the price-sensitive prepay market. Both phones have plug and play HSDPA modems enabling high-speed wireless broadband on PCs and Macs. The INQ Chat 3G and INQ Mini 3G will be available in Q4 2009.

Working closely with the Twitter team, INQ has developed an authentic Twitter application for both its new Social Mobiles. After the initial log in, Twitter will be ‘always on’. Consumers can send tweets and retweet via the internet rather than using SMS. With the INQ Chat, a specially designed Twitter widget will deliver Twitter updates straight to the home screen.

The INQ Mini 3G is a slimline Social Mobile that offers Twitter, Facebook, IM, Skype and web-based email services like Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail and GMail. It brings the usability that INQ is known for to a new form factor. Like the INQ Chat, the INQ Mini offers impressive capability at a fraction of the price of other application-rich devices.

INQ Chat 3G specifications include:

Widgets automatically push Twitter and Facebook updates to the home screen

Ditech Networks announced today that it is developing toktok, a new voice-enabled service to connect people with popular web productivity tools through one word spoken during a phone call. The service is being designed to instantly activate when ‘toktok’ is said during a phone call, eliminating the hassle and worry of dropping a call while manually checking availability or fumbling through a contact list. While you are still in phone conversation, toktok aims to enable you to schedule appointments, create new tasks, conference in others easily by voice command.

“Using state of the art word recognition technology, Ditech is redefining what it means to be truly hands-free,” said Dr. Hossein Eslambolchi, former AT&T CTO and technical advisor for Ditech Networks. “With over 15 years of experience improving the voice experience for consumers, Ditech is now utilizing its knowledge to further extend the power of the human voice. This is the beginning of a new era where people can use mobile applications in just about every situation.”

toktok is also being designed to include a Facebook application, ‘Voice Poke’, which will show which members of a person’s online social network are on the phone, and allow ’whisper’ messages to be sent directly into phone calls. These audio messages could be a request to join the conversation, a funny comment, or an important reminder. Future evolutions of the application could include the ability to deliver messages in celebrity voices, short music or movie clips, and more.

Ditech will be presenting toktok today at the eComm event at the San Francisco Airport Marriott Hotel in Burlingame, CA. toktok will be available on an invite only basis later this spring.

According to a recent online survey conducted by ABI Research, nearly half (46%) of 500 users who use social networks have also visited a social network through a mobile phone. Of these, nearly 70% have visited MySpace and another 67% had visited Facebook. No other social networking site reached 15% adoption mobile adoption.

“As in the online social networking space, there is clearly a large gap between the big two (MySpace and Facebook) social networks and the others,” says research director Michael Wolf. “ABI Research believes this is because consumers do not want to recreate entirely new and separate social networks for mobile, but rather want to tap into their existing social network and have it go with them via the mobile phone. For most, this means MySpace, Facebook, or even both.”

So what are these consumers doing when they access their mobile social network? The biggest features consumers use when accessing a social network on their phone is checking for comments and messages from their friends, with both of these features registering above 50% for mobile social network users. Posting status updates also has proven popular, with over 45% of mobile social users letting others what they are up to via their phone.

“The social network is increasingly becoming a central hub for communication across online and mobile domains for many consumers,” said Wolf. “To a degree, it allows them to centralize messaging, communication and even digital media consumption through a centralized property on various screens. We believe this centralization of a consumer’s digital lifestyle through social networks will only increase adoption of mobile social networking in coming years.”

Early this month at the DEMOfall 08 conference, Xumii launched the first social address book for mobile phones. Xumii’s social address book combines contact information, feeds and status updates from social networks, instant messaging services and mobile contacts in a single view. Xumii also offers integrated mobile messaging that allows users to maintain threaded conversations, share media files and create private groups. With Xumii, users can socialize with any contact on any network, regardless of whether it is a social network, an instant messenger service or another mobile carrier.

Xumii has developed a social address book that combines contacts from social networks, instant messaging services, media sharing Web sites and on phone mobile contacts into one easily accessible mobile address book. The address book gives users access to contact information, status updates, presence and news feeds for every contact on every network. The beta version of Xumii currently supports the following networks: Facebook, MySpace, imeem, YouTube, Flickr, AIM, Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger. Xumii will continue to aggressively expand network support throughout the year.

Other features include:

Mobile Messaging: Switch From SMS to Mobile Messaging – Xumii mobile messaging lets users text and share media files in a single threaded conversation. With Xumii mobile messaging, conversations can be shared by groups of people and can happen across networks.

Media Sharing: Share Pictures and Videos with Anyone, Easily – Photos and videos from the phone can be shared with other mobile users, or uploaded to media sharing websites and social networks. Users can also share media files from social networks and media sharing Web sites.

Group Messaging: Message and Share Files with Groups in Private – Xumii’s social address book makes it easy to set up private groups, allowing users to have conversations with groups of contacts in private. Unlike with SMS, Xumii group members can respond to all members of the group and post a reply in a threaded conversation. Members can also share photos, fun widgets and videos within groups. Xumii groups are a very powerful way to stay in touch with close friends and immediate family.

Message Walls: Post Pictures and Messages for Friends – Xumii is the first to introduce a mobile version of the popular wall feature used by most social networks. Walls are a rich graphical way for users to express themselves and communicate with their contacts. Similarly, anyone on a user’s contact list can leave messages or post pictures to another user’s wall.
