Acision and Seeker Wireless have partnered with SPH Search, a subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), to launch the nation’s first cross-telco mobile search marketing solution called Rednano Locate. Enabled by Acision’s expertise in mobile marketing and Seeker Wireless’ location-based solution called SeekerLocate, Rednano Locate is a mobile application that allows consumers to do a keyword search on more than 100,000 vendors through SPH Search’s directory of business listings. The search results produced will have location specific information on the establishment, including an option to view a map for directions to the selected listing. The service aims to bring location-based search to mass-market handsets.

Paul Jansen, CEO of SPH Search, said: “With Rednano Locate, users can have localised search results literally at their fingertips anytime, anywhere. Beyond just getting Directory information, users can do more: they can view a location map of the subject they are looking for, or directly dial the contact number given. We want the use of Rednano Locate to become an integral part of the daily lifestyle for Singaporeans, helping them make convenient choices whether for work or play.”

Is it better to receive search result in thumbnail instead of text based? Searchme has announced the availability of its visual search engine for mobile devices. Searchme’s engine delivers results as a browsable list of “pages” – pictures of actual web pages that users can check out before visiting them. All mobile users can now access the engine at m.searchme.com.

“Searchme’s visual search is now available to billions of mobile users, offering a new and better way to search the Web,” said Randy Adams, Searchme Founder and CEO. “Searchme’s interface makes it easy to find what you are looking because we show you pictures of the web sites without the delay of loading them in your browser. On mobile devices this is a real time saver and simply a better way to search the web.”

All mobile users can now go to m.searchme.com and simply enter a short query. The search engine will then display titles and pictures of web pages which match the query along with a list of categories that can be selected for further refinement. To go to a site, you simply select its picture.

comScore M:Metrics reports that in June 2008, 20.8 million U.S. mobile subscribers and 4.5 million European mobile phone subscribers accessed search during the month, an increase of 68 and 38 percent from June 2007, respectively. The U.K. had the highest penetration of mobile subscribers using search at 9.5 percent, followed closely by the U.S. at 9.2 percent.

“It is interesting to note that as we see the number of mobile search users increase, the frequency of activity is also growing,” observed Alistair Hill, analyst, comScore. “The number of people accessing mobile search at least once a week grew 50 percent in Europe, with France and Spain leading at a rate of 69 and 63 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, the number of U.S. users accessing mobile search has more than doubled as a result of expanded 3G penetration and smartphone adoption, as well as the proliferation of flat-rate data plans. We have also seen a substantial improvement to the mobile search offerings in the U.S. market.”

Google is the preferred brand for browser-based searches with a 60 percent share of mobile searchers (”mobile searcher penetration”) in all countries measured by comScore M:Metrics. Yahoo! ranks second in Germany, Italy, UK and the U.S. In the U.S., Yahoo’s mobile searcher penetration is 34.6 percent, more than double its share in most other countries.

Also beginning today, Yahoo! will provide mobile-sponsored search advertising within mobile search results conducted through the AT&T MEdia Net portal.

“With Yahoo! oneSearch, we created an award-winning mobile-first search experience capable of delivering relevant answers to mobile users on-the-go. Thrrum MMS Search enables camera phone users to find and browse information related to their physical environment using the MMS service integrated into their phones. Users can capture a picture of any text with their auto-focus or macro mode equipped camera phone and send the picture as a MMS to m@thrrum.com. Relevant search results are then sent to the users’ phones.

“The Thrrum MMS Search service was introduced earlier this year for AT&T and Sprint wireless subscribers,” said K. Gopalakrishnan, CEO of 23half. “Now, T-Mobile and Verizon wireless subscribers also can point their camera phone at a book, a product label or any printed material, take a picture and send a picture message to get relevant information right on their phone. With Thrrum, any text that you see around you becomes a hyperlink that can be ‘clicked’ upon with your camera phone.”

The Thrrum MMS Search service is presently in beta and is available free of charge to T-Mobile and Verizon wireless subscribers in the United States.

23half announced the launch of Thrrum MMS Search. The service enables camera phone users to find and browse information related to their physical environment using the Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) integrated into their phones. Users can capture a picture of any text with their camera phone and send the picture as an MMS to m@thrrum.com. Relevant search results are then sent to the users’ phones. The Thrrum MMS Search service is presently in beta and is available free of charge to AT&T wireless subscribers in the United States.

“Thrrum introduced the exciting visual click-to-search experience last year,” said K. Gopalakrishnan, CEO of 23half. “Now, Thrrum MMS Search extends the experience to additional devices without requiring any software to be downloaded. Users of camera phones can point their camera phone at a book, a product label or any printed material, take a picture and send an MMS to get relevant information right on their phone. With Thrrum, any text that you see around you becomes a hyperlink that can be ‘clicked’ upon with your camera phone.”
