SEVEN today announced the availability of itsmobile messaging solution for the Android platform. The SEVEN Android client is available today for carriers and device manufacturers who plan to embed mobile email solutions on Android devices. SEVEN is currently demonstrating Android solutions at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Other than supporting standard email protocol and email provider like AOL, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, SEVEN can also be used for Microsoft Exchange or IBM Lotus Domino corporate email. This includes the access to calendar and address book on Microsoft Exchange.

“We are experiencing strong demand from both carriers and device manufacturer partners for Android solutions”, said David Ratner Senior Vice President, Engineering and Delivery. “We see tremendous opportunity to improve on what is currently available and provide richer, more functional Android devices to end-users around the world. Support of Android is a natural evolution of our strategy to enable mobile network operators, service providers and handset makers to offer a superior messaging experience across a wide range of mobile devices.”

Starting in Q2, users with compatible phones will be able to download the Android Mobile email client from the SEVEN community site at http://community.seven.com or directly from the Android market.

In just 12 months, Microsoft’s unified communications (UC) platform is in use by more than half of Fortune 500 companies. According to Gurdeep Singh Pall, the company’s corporate vice president of the Unified Communications Group, the seamless integration between Exchange Server 2007 and Office Communications Server 2007 is the important point for customers to get into this service.

Unified communications (UC) is “an industry term used to describe all forms of call and multimedia/cross-media message-management functions controlled by an individual user for both business and social purposes”

“Selling unified communications like a puzzle that customers need to assemble and configure themselves runs counter to the whole concept of unified communications,” he said. “Our competitors are offering, in effect, an ‘un-unified’ communications system.”

Currently, Cisco and Microsoft are on a collision course in unified communications,” Joe Wilcox wrote. For example, Cisco is buying Jabber. Wilcox revealed, Jabber will give Cisco some real scale for enterprise instant message, presence and collaboration.

On the cell-phone side, according to Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft is working on a set of Communications Server services for Windows Mobile phones. “These services are codenamed Rouge,” she said.

Nokia today announced that it is expanding its device range which enables Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync to all Nokia S60 3rd Edition devices. Nokia also announced today that Mail for Exchange will be available out-of-the-box in future releases of Nokia Eseries and Nokia Nseries devices.

Nokia owners whose companies use Exchange can set up Mail for Exchange for free on their devices in various ways without paying additional services or subscription fees – from the email set-up plug-in on the home screen, by launching the application from the Download! folder, or via the Settings Wizard. Once the application is set up, users utilize their current data plan service to get real-time access to their office email, calendar, contacts, tasks and company directory over a secure connection.

By connecting to the Exchange Server 2007, Mail for Exchange enables features such as Autodiscover, which drastically simplifies the set-up process by requiring the email account holder to only enter their email address, password, domain and usernames; ‘Out of Office’ messaging, enabling busy professionals to set their out-of-office messages directly from their Nokia device; synchronization when roaming, a must-have feature for travelling businesspeople; and also Flag status for follow-ups.

While the Exchange ActiveSync protocol is compatible with many types of devices, Nokia device users will have access to features that are currently not available in other Exchange ActiveSync licensees’ devices. Setting email priorities, alerts for meeting request conflicts, a standalone global address list application to search for a colleague’s contact details quickly, downloading and editing all types of attachments, not just image files, are must-have factors that users will expect from their mobile email application.

If you are using the new Mail for Exchange 2.5 which was released in June, a new version 2.5.5 is now available with some bug fixes. Beginning with this release, Mail for Exchange will be distributed as multiple SIS files created for S60 3.0/3.1/3.2 and 3.1 with Home Screen which is on Nokia E71/E66. You must use the version of the SIS file that matches your type of device.

Here is the release note on the new version

Swedish language support: If you tried to run Mail for Exchange 2.5.0 or 2.5.3 on a phone using the Swedish language the application was crashing. This language error has been corrected in Mail for Exchange 2.5.5.

Exchange 2007: The Mail for Exchange 2.5.0 release had an error synchronizing against an Exchange 2007 server without Service Pack 1. This error has been corrected in Mail for Exchange 2.5.3.

Mail for Exchange language: After Mail for Exchange is installed the application is launched automatically. For that first launch the language used was always English in the 2.5.0 release. Now Mail for Exchange 2.5.3 will always show the proper language.

Meeting Requests: When accepting/declining a meeting request on the device, the meeting originator’s calendar meeting tracking tab will be correctly updated in most cases.

If you are currently using any version of Mail for Exchange older than version 2.0.0, you must first uninstall that Mail for Exchange client and then install the 2.5.5 Mail for Exchange client. To begin using the new Exchange 2007 server features for the first time, you will need to perform a Full Resync on the device (Options>Full resync) after you have upgraded to Mail for Exchange 2.5.5.
