Apple’s iPhone OS 4.0 Already Jailbroken [video]

The iPhone is one of those devices available on the market that you either love, or hate. It doesn’t seem that there’s much of a grey area with the handset. Which makes sense, because the device offers for a lot of people, but for some (if not most), it doesn’t offer anything but endless application icons. However, if you do find yourself with an iPhone, and you get bored of it, you can always jailbreak it, and open up a world of limitless potential. Want multitasking? You can do that. Oh, you wanted multitasking in an official capacity? Okay then, you can get iPhone OS 4.0 for that. But, you still want to jailbreak it? Oh, okay… Fine.

The newest version of Apple’s mobile Operating System hasn’t even been out 24 hours, and it’s already been jailbroken. That’s right, we’ve even got video proof of the whole thing going down. Thanks to MuscleNerd, a member of the remarkably renowned iPhone Dev Team, the jailbreak was videoed and subsequently tweeted about, showing the world that OS 4.0 has been gutted and used like a plaything. Right now, there’s no rules or walkthrough for you to put your own jailbreak on your iPhone running OS 4.0, but we imagine that’s a good thing. In classic Apple fashion, by the time the next Beta gets released, that jailbreak will be patched up, and you’ll be right back to square one.

As for MuscleNerd, he’s got a bit of a public service announcement in regards to downloading iPhone OS 4.0 onto your personal device: don’t bother. He says the initial Beta build is still fairly buggy, and it’s generally not worth it. From our own testings of previous iPhone developer builds, we can attest to this. But, as long as Apple stays on top of releasing new version of their Beta, the builds will get more stable, and usable. Or, you could just wait until this Summer when the final build is ready and released. Anyone out there have OS 4.0 on their device yet?

iPhone Dev Team Releases redsn0w 0.9.2

redsn0w 0.9.2 is now available for download by the iPhone Dev Team, offering iPhone jailbreak and unlocking and support both Mac and Windows PC. According to the team, the new version “gives you the ability to quickly change your boot or recovery logos and enable “verbose” booting”. There are also a beta 0.9.3 version. The 0.9.3 version will enable the internet tethering via your 3G connection with your PC. If you are going to try any of these, remember to read through the wiki page carefully.

New iPhone Shipment Fixed 24kpwn Exploit

Apple is now reported to be shipping its iPhone with a new boot ROM, fixing a 24kpwn exploit that was used by the iPhone Dev Team for jailbreaking. The new iBoot-359.3.2 was found by Mathieulh in his iPhone, although we have yet to read more cases with the new iBoot. [via BGR / iClarified]

New PwnageTool 3.1.4 (Mac Only) Released for iPhone JailBreak

iPhone Dev Team has just released their latest PwnageTool 3.1.4 tool to jail break your iPhone. The PwnageTool 3.1.4 supports iPhone OS 3.1.2 and can be used on iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and iPod Touch 1G/2G. iPod Touch 3G is not supported at the moment. Read more on the instruction over at their blog.

This release allows your baseband to remain unlocked at 3.1.2, but it does not unlock a new baseband put there by restoring to official 3.1.x. It is super important that people who need the unlock to understand they can keep it only by starting at 3.0 (or earlier) and updating solely to custom IPSWs that don’t update the baseband. For those who have been onboard the “unlock train”, simply install ultrasn0w via Cydia once you’ve restored to your custom IPSW. Don’t forget to turn off the “3G” setting in Settings->General->Network if you use T-Mobile in the U.S.A.

iPhone Dev Team Updates redsn0w and ultrasn0w for iPhone 3GS

Both the famous redsn0w jailbreak and ultrasn0w unlocking tool can now support iPhone 3GS with the latest version. iPhone Dev Team has just released the tools, although they had previously decided to postpone the release until iPhone OS 3.1 is out. Check out the download instruction here.

We realize we upset some folks (e.g. existing 3GS owners) with our earlier announcement that we wanted to hold onto the 3GS iBoot-family hole until 3.1 was out. Our aim there was to get as many people as possible onboard (within reason of course) before revealing the hole, since Apple will fix it immediately. But all of that became moot when the purplera1n release was made, since it uses the same hole.

ultrasn0w unlockers — You all must remain particularly vigilant against upgrading your basebands, since doing so will kill the unlock (for most phones, there’s no going backwards in baseband version). Apple has gotten very serious with the latest baseband — they’ve removed 180 (!) commands in an effort to cut down their exposure to holes. So please always stay away from stock Apple IPSWs and instead use our tools as we release them. These tools let you update your firmware without updating your baseband.

Those installing ultrasn0w will probably also need to do a single run of Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings. We’re testing various fixes for that particular glitch.

redsn0w platforms — This is the first redsn0w release that also supports linux! It’s the newest version of the bunch, so any feedback would be appreciated. But right now, redsn0w should work on OS X, Windows, and linux.

iPhone Dev Team: iPhone 3GS Can be Unlocked Soon

About one week after the iPhone 3GS went on sale, the iPhone dev team has announced that they have found the 24Kpwn exploit on the new iPhone 3GS, which was also found on the older iPod Touch 2G. Using a similar technique, the team is developing a jailbreak and an unlock tool for the new iPhone generation.

iPhone 3G with iPhone 3.0 OS Can Be Unlocked with Ultrasn0w Now

Just released from the iPhone dev team, users who have upgraded their iPhone 3G with iPhone 3.0 OS can now be unlocked with the latest Ultrasn0w tool. The Ultrasn0w is used together with redsn0w or PwnageTool, which will jailbreak your iPhone 3G first before you proceed with the unlocking.

The redsn0w tool is released last week, which can be applied to iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch with iPhone 3.0 OS for jailbreaking. The original iPhone 2G can also be unlocked using the redsn0w tool alone without the latest Ultrasn0w

iPhone OS 3.0 Unlocking Tool Available This Friday

While iPhone OS 3.0 will be released this week to the current iPhone users, iPhone Dev Team has promised to release an unlock tool called ultrasn0w this Friday. It is unsure that if ultrasn0w can be used on the new iPhone 3G S, the team should be able to do further testing when the 3G S is available. As for now, check out a demonstration video on the ultrasn0w.

Window QuickPwn 2.1 Available Now

Made for using the PwnageTool in Windows OS, the Window QuickPwn 2.1 is now available with the support of iPhone firmware 2.1. QuickPwn will unlock and jailbreak the first iPhone generation, but will only jailbreak the first iPod Touch generation and iPhone 3G.

Change Log for the New iPhone 2.1 Software Update

Here is a list of the changes for the new iPhone 2.1 firmware, which have been released last Friday. The update will decrease number of dropped calls, promise to give you better battery life and other bug fixes. To update your iPhone you can use the updater tool in your iTunes.

Dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
