Just when you thought that Samsung couldn’t make any more subtle tweaks to their candybar-styled phones, here we are with another one. A bit more square, it seems, than the other models out there (like the Monte or Shark), but it’s still got that Samsung appeal to it, doesn’t it? Well, if you’re in India, you’re in luck, because the Guru is in.

The Samsung Guru 1175 is just another addition to the Samsung Guru line-up, and it has the same general features: an integrated FM radio (which can play music up to 23 hours on a single charge), Bike Mode, the ability to choose which contacts you get calls from, and a flashlight. The screen is of the 1.52-inch variety, and Samsung says you should get about 12 hours of talk time on a single charge.

The device itself isn’t all that glamorous, but we imagine that for the price of only Rs. 1,459 (or about $32), you shouldn’t expect to get anything too glamorous. But, it’s a Samsung candybar phone, which means it should be able to get the job done without much of a hassle. Plus, you get an FM radio that lasts upwards of 23 hours, and that’s pretty cool.

We’re not strangers here to hearing about India getting low-cost, if not stripped down versions of the mainstream devices, or in this case mobile platforms. And, we’ll be honest, we’re not at all surprised by this news. We’re glad to see that the Windows Phone 7 platform will see a lot of markets, especially markets the corporations deem “emerging,” but our big question would be this: wouldn’t this just make it somewhere in the region of a Windows Mobile Classic release?

Here’s the deal: Sudeep Bharati, the Director of Developer Tools for Microsoft India’s Visual Studio team, has recently made public that Microsoft seems to be planning, and may release a smaller, cheaper version of Windows Phone 7 for the India market. According to Bharati, the handsets will incorporate a lot of the same features that the “big brother” version will, but the OEMs will have fewer requirements for handset form factor, screen size and memory. In fact, there will apparently only need to be 128MB of RAM on each device to get certified as an official Windows Phone 7 device.

We understand that you simply can’t have all the same features in these devices. Simply put, Zune Software isn’t in India, so obviously that interconnectedness with that platform isn’t going to happen. But, with the lesser requirements for hardware, and we imagine the software will obviously be downgraded in one fashion or another –even if it does share similarities–, we can’t help but see this as another version of Windows Mobile Classic (Windows Mobile 6.5.3), and not Windows Phone 7. Though, it will help sell with the better title, so we can see where Microsoft is coming from. We’ll have to wait and see if this breaks cover in India, as well as other emerging markets around the world.

We’ve got to admit, that this whole mobile TV thing is definitely beginning to pick up speed. You know it’s growing when a company like Samsung announces dedicated devices to do just that, and solely for one region. Welcome to the future, ladies and gentlemen, where the three screens are inexorably merging into one. (At least, that’s what looks like companies are trying to accomplish.) In any event, meet the Samsung Corby TV (here’s the original Corby) and Metro TV (and here’s the GSM variant of the Metro), which are headed over to India to sport their mobile TV ways, and hopefully spread the good word on watching your stories while on the move.

Both devices are variants to the already released CDMA versions, but only so much as to get the message of mobile TV evangelized. Both handsets now feature the customized application called MimobiTV Mobile TV, which was developed by Apalya, and allows users to watch live TV, or on-demand content. These handsets have access to over 40 channels, and they’re able to stream the service whether they’re on 1X CDMA or 3G networks.

Device wise, the Corby TV is still one of the cutest handsets out there. Packing a 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen display, with Samsung’s TouchWiz User Interface, 2MP camera on the back, Bluetooth support and MicroSD card slot, you can pick it up for Rs. 9,699. And the Metro TV rocks a 2-inch display, 2Mp camera, Bluetooth support, and MicroSD card slot. It will cost you a cool Rs. 6,999. Awesome features for a relatively low price, but we’re wondering how many people out there will want to watch their favorite show on a 2-inch display. What do you think?

This isn’t the first time the Samsung Monte (S5620) has graced these pages, and we’ve got to admit: we’re glad to see it back. Perhaps not so much to announce that it’s heading all the way over to India, but if it’s going anywhere, that’s not a bad place at all. Especially not when you consider how cheap the device is going to be, compared with the nice set of features the handset offers. We’re sure that some folks in that neck of the woods may wish to see something a bit different, but we promise, this isn’t a bad phone at all.

But it’s more than obvious that Samsung’s not stopping their touchscreen phone onslaught any time soon. The Monte is just one amongst many, but at least it looks a bit different in the aesthetics department. Specifications wise, it’s packing a 3.0-inch WQVGA touchscreen, with TouchWiz 2.0 powering the User Interface, a 3.2MP camera on the back, and a 3.5mm headphone jack to boot. Other features include quad-band GSM, 3G, GPS, Bluetooth, and FM Radio with RDS technology. If you’re a fan of putting photos and music on your phone, then you’ll be glad to hear that the device also supports a MicroSD card.

The Samsung Monte should be available now in India, and will cost you a cool Rs. 8,850. As we mentioned above, the price tag definitely doesn’t reflect the features of this mid-range device, and if you’re in the market for something like this, we would definitely recommend a Samsung, with that beloved (or hated) TouchWiz User Interface. Though, we also recommend trying out any phone you’re about to buy, to make sure that you’re happy with it before you walk out of the shop.

While the Samsung Galaxy S and u820 may be all the rage right now (maybe more so for the former), that’s not stopping Samsung from continuing on their goal of mobile phone market domination. We’re of the mind that the company believes they can accomplish this with sheer numbers. Though, we really don’t mind, because it just gives us more phones to look at. And, if we can be completely honest for a moment here, the Metro 3G, also known as the Shark in other parts of the world, looks awesome. In a more retro, stylized kind of way. And we’re all about the retro.

Available today, the Shark, which has been re-branded the Metro 3G for its launch in India, is super-thin. Measuring in at only 11.9 millimeters thin, we can only imagine that the device is light as a feather, too. At least, we’re hoping so. Of course, keeping in the social networking trend, the Metro 3G gives you quick access to sites like Facebook, Picasa, and MySpace. The display is a 2.2-inch QVGA, it obviously has 3G connectivity (hence the name), and it’s rocking a Digital Natural Sound Engine. It’s also got a stereo FM radio with RDS, 3.2MP camera with smile shot, built-in Instant Messaging with Google Talk and AIM, and 100MB of built-in storage. If that’s not enough for you, there’s also a MicroSD card slot.

As we mentioned above, the Metro 3G should be available starting now, so if you’re in India, you should check it out. Retailers should be selling the handset somewhere in the area of 8,250 INR (which is about $182). If you’re somewhere else where this Shark treads water and you’ve happened to pick one up, let us know how it works for you.

We’re not going to say that it happens all the time, but it’s not impossible, either. What are we talking about? We’re talking about finding a phone that, for all intents and purposes, many would consider a rip-off of a “larger brand” that is actually good. In this case, we have the G-Fone G588, which looks shockingly like a BlackBerry Curve 8900, minus the trackball. Unfortunately, there’s nothing really disappointing about this handset that would make us want to shun it for its striking similarities.

And maybe you’re one of the people out there that wants to have a dual SIM BlackBerry device. We don’t think that’s going to happen any time soon, so you should probably lose all hope. But! If you happen to be in India, or are travelling to India any time soon, here’s your next best thing: a device that can run on either a CDMA or GSM network, has a full QWERTY keyboard, an FM radio, Opera Mini pre-loaded, 1.3MP camera, a MicroSD card slot for expandable memory, and social network integration provided by Nimbuz. It’s got a 2.2″ QVGA display, Bluetooth connectivity, and an MP3 player.

Like we said, there’s nothing terrible about this device. It’s actually not that bad at all. Sure, it doesn’t have the BlackBerry logo on it, but to some people out there, that may not matter. And if you’re in India, this does look like a great option. Of course, if some other rumors are true, maybe you should hold off for a bit longer.
