Ericsson and TeliaSonera have unveiled the world’s first commercial Long- Term Evolution (LTE) site in Stockholm, Sweden. LTE enables unprecedented performance in terms of peak data rates, spectrum efficiency and delay. Ericsson has already demonstrated peak rates of 160Mbps.

The site will be part of a commercial network scheduled to go live in 2010, providing the ultra-high data speeds needed for services such as internet TV, mobile video blogging, on-line video games and the mobile office environment.

Ulf Ewaldsson, Vice President and Head of Product Area Radio at Ericsson, says: “The unveiling of this site shows that LTE is no longer the story of the future; it is the story of today. Ericsson, as a leader in LTE development, is proud to work with TeliaSonera to bring a commercial LTE network to life.”

Other than the LTE network, the companies has also signed an agreement for a mobile advertising solution. The Personal Pod Advertising service, part of Ericsson’s Mobile TV solution, allow advertisements to be sent out as podcasts overnight when traffic is low. The solution offers significant benefits for both operators, who earn revenue on ads sent out, and for retail companies, which can track consumer behavior and interact with specific target groups.

Ericsson has start to collaborate with Intel to ensure that Ericsson’s Mobile Broadband Modules are interoperable with Intel Anti-Theft PC Protection Technology for notebooks. Through this collaboration between Ericsson and Intel, a theft management service residing in the network can send a message via SMS to the mobile broadband module inside the notebook, which securely transfers the message to Intel’s Anti-Theft function inside the processor platform, which takes appropriate actions, such as completely locking the computer, making it unusable. When the notebook is located and recovered, an unlock message can be sent to the notebook that makes the data accessible again.

When a loss or theft is detected, Intel Anti-Theft PC Protection technology can lock the laptop, rendering it useless, by blocking the boot process, and when working in conjunction with third-party encryption hardware or software can protect data by deleting cryptographic keys or similar essential code for decryption.

The theft management service can also take advantage of built-in Global Positioning System (GPS) technology in the Ericsson mobile broadband module, which can send location data to a central server. The location function can be utilized to determine a theft situation when the notebook is moved outside a pre-defined area. The solution will be available in commercial data protection products starting second half of 2009.

Lenovo ThinkPad T400 notebooks can already support for Intel Anti-Theft PC Protection with Absolute Computrace software. Absolute Computrace and Intel Anti-Theft PC Protection working together provide the PC with intelligent mechanisms that detect potential theft situations and respond according to programmed IT policy. For example, if a Lenovo ThinkPad T400 notebook has not “checked in” with the Absolute Monitoring Center over the Internet within a specified time, Anti-Theft PC Protection working through Computrace would automatically lock the notebook, rendering it unusable to an unauthorized user. Working alone, Intel Anti-Theft PC Protection can lock a computer if it experiences more than a prescribed number of password attempts, or if it exceeds an internally programmed IT policy for check-in time.

Ericsson today unveiled its latest energy-optimized radio base station site concept, a research project for a pioneering wind-powered Tower Tube. Working with Vertical Wind AB and Uppsala University in Sweden, Ericsson is developing the concept as part of its commitment to sustainable and cost-efficient solutions that help bring communications to all.

The wind-powered Tower Tube takes the energy-lean design of Ericsson’s original Tower Tube one step further by employing renewable energy. It harnesses wind power via a four-blade turbine with five-meter blades vertically attached to the tower. The vertical rotor blades work silently and minimize the load on the tower during operation.

Trials will be conducted to determine if the design of the energy-efficient Ericsson Tower Tube and the vertical wind rotor blades work together to enable low-cost mobile communication, with reduced impacts on both the local and global environment.

The Ericsson Tower Tube has no need for feeders and cooling systems. With up to 40 percent lower power consumption than traditional base station sites, it helps operators reduce their operating costs significantly. It employs cutting-edge design and can be built in many sizes and painted in a variety of colors, making it a natural fit for any landscape.

“We are excited to work with LG Electronics to give consumers and business users the freedom and flexibility to access internet in the way they want it, wherever they are.” says Mats Norin, Vice President, Mobile Broadband Modules, Ericsson. “Ericsson is also very pleased to be selected to provide mobile broadband modules to LG Electronics’ netbooks which is a segment that is forecasted to grow fast”

Market projections indicate that in 2011, approximately 200 million notebooks will ship annually and Ericsson anticipates that 50 percent of those notebooks will feature a built-in HSPA mobile broadband module. Users will increasingly have the option to take their broadband connections with them, delivering on the promise of full service broadband, which is anytime, anywhere access from the screen or device of choice.
