DISH Network Corporation and Alcatel-Lucent today announced that DISH Network will test the DVB-SH (Digital Video Broadcasting – Satellite services to Handhelds) mobile broadcast technology in the United States, with the appropriate DVB-SH equipment, test tools and training provided by Alcatel-Lucent. This evaluation will take place in DISH Network’s laboratories in Atlanta, Ga. from May to August 2008, with the ultimate objective to validate the performance and cost-efficiency of the DVB-SH standard.

DVB-SH is an evolution of DVB-H and a powerful mobile broadcast standard allowing cost-effective mobile TV deployments. It can be used in any frequency spectrum below 3GHz, including UHF, L band and S band, and in terrestrial, satellite or hybrid networks. The DVB-SH waveform definition was published by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute(ETSI) in March 2008.

“As is our history, DISH Network continues to explore new, cutting-edge technology for consumer applications,” said Nolan Daines, senior vice president of Strategic Initiatives for DISH Network. “Considering the global momentum of DVB-SH, we decided that performing a critical analysis of this new open standard was the right thing to do for DISH Network. We look forward to working in tandem with Alcatel-Lucent during this testing phase.”

ICO Global Communications has successfully launched its North American geosynchronous satellite, ICO G1. ICO will be conducting alpha trials for its fully interactive mobile video, navigation and emergency assistance service to be known as ICO mim (mobile interactive media) later this year. The mobile television component of ICO mim will use the DVB-SH standard, and is the first deployment of DVB-SH in the United States.

“With our launch of ICO G1, ICO is now poised to deliver a new generation of mobile services for consumers,” commented Tim Bryan, chief executive officer of ICO. “We look forward to meeting our 12th and final FCC milestone by May 15, 2008, when we anticipate certifying that ICO G1 is operational. Later this summer we will commence market trials in Las Vegas, Nevada and the Raleigh Durham area of North Carolina for our mobile interactive media service, ICO mim, which we expect to launch commercially later in 2009.”

ICO has been conducting the first-ever trials of the DVB-SH standard in North America in Las Vegas. In conjunction with the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show, ICO will be conducting mobile demonstrations of its ICO mim service in a specially equipped car on April 16 and 17.
