Honestly, the life of the HTC Hero, and all of its derivatives, has been one that’s been marred by promised updates, all of which have fallen apart at the seams, and ultimately never made it to any customer’s handset. Of course, these promised updates always came one way or another, but usually as one, giant glaring method: leaks. Internal documents being passed around, before one person would finally get the nerve to snap a quick photo of it, and then the Internet would run wild with it. Sure, we’ve passed it along in the past, but we’ve always told you to take it with a grain of salt. Because, we love leaks as much as you, but we’re far bigger fans of official announcements.

And, thankfully, Verizon has finally stepped up to the plate and announced, in their own words, that the update to the Droid Eris, pulling it out of the depths of Android 1.5 torture, to the glowing pedestal that is Android 2.1. The update is coming thanks to an Over the Air (OTA) update, and it’s being sent out in the customary fashion: slowly. According to Verizon’s official Twitter support page, it will take up to 13 days for all of the Eris owners out there to get their update. Your phone will automatically tell you when there’s an update available, and you’ll just have to follow the on-screen instructions.

If you get the update, let us know what you think of it. And, as soon as we get the update on our own Eris lying around here, we’ll go ahead and give you a quick review of the changes, and tell you if it’s worth all the trouble. Oh, and yes, this does mean that the Droid Eris is the first Hero variant to get upgraded to Android 2.1. It’s beating the likes of the original HTC Hero across the pond, and the Sprint Hero (that was released first). So, count your blessings, Verizon Wireless customers.
