Now a days, using your handset for your media playback makes all the sense in the world. So, if you’re someone who’s been known to plug it into a home theater system for any amount of time, you know that the sound can sometimes feel a bit “less” than what you’d probably normally enjoy. Well, Nokia wants to help alleviate that, so they’ve decided to pen a deal with Dolby.

That’s exactly what Dolby has announced this morning. They’ve begun a pretty hearty collaboration with Nokia, which involves integrating Dolby’s surround sound speakers, along with their high definition audio technology, into some Nokia devices. And, sure enough, the Nokia N8 is the first handset to get the treatment. When the device launches later this year, it will be able to utilize Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound when connected through HDMI to a home theater system.

While we’d love to hear that mini Dolby surround sound speakers are implanted in the Nokia N8, we imagine that this will do for our music listening needs. Then again, we’re not sure how often we’ll have our handset plugged into our home speakers, or why we’d really want to do that, but Nokia must think we will. Maybe that alone will make us do it? What about you? Will you utilize this feature?

“Being the first company to incorporate Dolby Mobile technology into handsets for the global market reinforces LG’s role as a leader in the mobile industry and in multimedia phones,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “We believe this technology will raise the bar for audio quality on multimedia phones and expect Dolby Mobile to help us create a new trend in the mobile phone industry. LG is committed to providing our customers with the best features available and our new collaboration with Dolby helps us deliver on this pledge.”

LG plans to apply Dolby Mobile technology to a wide range of multimedia features on its phones. Some of the Dolby Mobile features that LG plans to incorporate into its phones include:

Mobile Surround, which delivers a realistic surround sound experience using headphones

Sound Space Expander, which creates a wide, rich, and spacious soundstage experience especially suited to music playback

Natural Bass, which adds powerful boost and bass extension

High-Frequency Enhancer, which enhances music and other content by restoring high-frequency effects

Graphic EQ, which helps tune the audio experience for different content types

Sound Level Control, which helps level out audio for a more consistent playback volume

Mono-to-Stereo Converter, which improves the playback experience of user-generated content

LG plans to begin launching high-end multimedia phones that incorporate Dolby Mobile technology from the fourth quarter of this calendar year.
