MetroPCS has launched MetroFlash, allowing consumers to bring their compatible CDMA handsets to be used on MetroPCS’ network. MetroFlash will eliminate for many consumers the requirement of having to purchase a new handset when signing up for MetroPCS service.

Customers using MetroFlash will receive a free month of service, plus unlimited local, long distance, voicemail and text messaging for $40 a month and pay a $30 fee. The service will be available at all MetroPCS company owned stores and select authorized dealers in all MetroPCS markets, excluding Las Vegas and Shreveport/Bossier City.

Offering consumers the ability to join MetroPCS with their existing handset makes switching carriers easier – and more cost efficient – than ever, said Tom Keys, Chief Operating Officer of MetroPCS. Not since number portability have consumers been offered such a convenient option in switching service providers. With the rising cost of gas and food, consumers are looking for ways to reduce expenses and the launch of MetroFlash, along with our flat-rate, unlimited low cost service plans, makes MetroPCS a more affordable wireless option.

Samsung seem determined to cater for all possible options with their new SCH-W599 handset. Not only can the device handle both CDMA and GSM networks, but it actually has two SIM card slots meaning, like its D780 candybar contemporary, it can simultaneously log onto two separate GSM accounts. That means you can receive calls on, say, personal and business numbers using the same handset (keeping the CDMA account for extra-curricular mischief, perhaps).

The W599 is controlled predominantly via a 2.4-inch QVGA 260k colour passive touchscreen, complete with extending stylus to take advantage of the handwriting recognition. It also has directional controls encircling a scroll wheel for multiple navigation options. Samsung have also added something they’re calling “handwritten instructions”, which seems to be a way of triggering shortcuts by drawing symbols onto the screen.

There’s a 2-megapixel camera, MP3 and streaming media playback, Bluetooth, an FM radio with 20 presets and 34MB of onboard memory; a microSD slot is there to add to that when necessary. Most surprisingly, perhaps, all that cellular radio cleverness is squeezed into something not actually all that thick. The SCH-W599 is set for release in China, priced at 4,490 yuan ($650).

Kyocera Wireless has announced three new CDMA handsets at the CTIA Wireless trade show last week. Headlined by the striking Kyocera Neo E1100, the lineup features elegant designs packed with features that belie their affordable price points. Along with the Neo E1100, KWC introduced the Kyocera Mako S4000 and the Kyocera Adreno S2400. All three of the phones support cellular (800 MHz), PCS (1900 MHz) and AWS frequencies (1700 and 2100 MHz) and will be available in Q3 2008.
