A little known company called Elektrobit has come out with a unique phone that could use GSM in the city, 3G or Wi-Fi when you need it, and turn into a satellite phone when take that safari trip. The phone, which was shown at the CTIA show in Las Vegas this week, strangely looks so much like the RIM Bold or a Motorola Q. However, it is actually a Windows Mobile phone. The phone has no visible antenna, it uses a 300 MHz STN 8815 Nomadik chip, has a 3-megapixel camera, and is supposed to get 4 hours of 3G talk time and about 2 hours of satellite talk time.

Between 2005 and 2008, AT&T will have invested more than $20 billion in network improvements and upgrades – an average of $5 billion a year. Much of this network investment has gone to build out the 3G broadband data network, which today is available in 296 major metropolitan markets. In addition, the company is deploying additional 3G coverage using 850 megahertz (MHz) spectrum that is now available from the recent sunset of its older TDMA network. This spectrum extends farther and better covers the interior of buildings.

The new sites are part of AT&T’s continued expansion of high speed wireless service in the Rocky Mountain Region and part of the more than $50 million network investment planned throughout the state of Colorado in 2008. With the addition of the Roaring Fork Valley, the AT&T 3G network is now available in more than 280 U.S. major metropolitan areas. The company will deliver 3G service to nearly 350 leading U.S. markets by the end of 2008.

Other plans for 2008 include the completion of the nation’s first High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA)-enabled network by the middle of the year. The AT&T 3G network now delivers LaptopConnect users typical downlink speeds ranging between 700 kilobits per second (Kbps) and 1.7 megabits per second (Mbps), and faster uplink speeds ranging between 500 Kbps and 1.2 Mbps. The faster uplink speeds allow users to quickly send large files and take full advantage of the latest Internet and business applications.

Since it has 3G network capability, the phone has a front-camera, so its users can do video-conference.

Two mega pixel camera with recording capability is an interesting feature for the middle-end phone like this.
