HP joins the iPhone club

Just a few weeks after Microsoft released its first iPhone application, Seadragon, another big rival jumps into the iPhone bandwagon: HP. The Palo Alto-based tech company just announced iPrint Photo, a free application now available on Apple’s App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

This software is designed to let customers easily print photos wherever there’s access to a wireless network and HP printers.

The company plans to show off iPrint Photo next month at both the Macworld Expo in San Francisco and the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Accoring to Darrell Walker, a software development engineer in HP’s Mac group, HP was exploring other opportunities to develop for the iPhone.

Get iPhone 3G in Taiwan on Dec 13

Chunghwa Telecom has set December 13 as the official date of iPhone 3G available in Taiwan. The company would sell iPhones with a two-year service contract for a minimal month fee of NT$1,049 (about US$ 31).

People can get a free iPhone with 8GB memory space by signing up a two-year contract with a monthly charge of NT$2,549 (about US$ 76). Another option is also available: buy the iPhone from this operator for NT$26,600 (about US$ 800) and get a prepaid number.

Talk about a GreenerGadget! Swedish designer Peter Thuvander has designed an induction-powered yo-yo charger for iPhones and other Apple handheld devices. Housing a lithium ion cell, and based on the OLPC crank and this dandy wind-up remote, Peter is betting that the physics are close to there. “The remote control needs only 30 cranks–which is nothing when you yo-yo,” argues Peter. He’s also thinking about what road warriors call “opportunitic charging”: “I think I’d at least use it as an emergency device for all the dead iPhone moments I have.”

Why does Peter create this? “To celebrate my new iPhone and the fact that darkness is looming over me. I´ve done this: An induction powered yoyocharger for Apple,” he said. “And since solarchargers don´t work at night or in Sweden half the year, this should be a smash hit.”

AT&T Announces iPhone 3G Pricing in US

AT&T today announced iPhone 3G pricing for new and existing AT&T customers, several voice and data plans, and tips on how to be “iReady” when iPhone 3G goes on sale at AT&T retail stores at 8 a.m. local time on Friday, July 11.

iPhone 3G will be available for $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model. These prices require two-year contracts and are available to the following customers:

iPhone customers who purchased before July 11
Customers activating a new line with AT&T
Current AT&T customers who are eligible, at the time of purchase, for an upgrade discount

Existing AT&T customers who are not currently eligible for an upgrade discount can purchase iPhone 3G for $399 for the 8GB model or $499 for the 16GB model. Both options require a new two-year service agreement. In the future, AT&T will offer a no-contract-required option for $599 (8GB) or $699 (16GB).

Current customers may also choose to wait until they become eligible for an upgrade discount. Eligibility is generally determined by amount of time remaining on a current contract and payment history. Current AT&T customers who are upgrading to iPhone 3G will pay an $18 upgrade fee and new AT&T customers will pay the standard $36 activation fee.

iPhone 3G customers can choose from four individual AT&T Nation plans, which bundle voice and unlimited data (e-mail and Web browsing).

AT&T Nation Unlimited: Includes unlimited Anytime Minutes for $129.99 a month.
AT&T Nation 1350: Includes 1350 Anytime Minutes and unlimited Night & Weekend Minutes for $109.99 a month.
AT&T Nation 900: Includes 900 Anytime Minutes and unlimited Night & Weekend Minutes for $89.99 a month.
AT&T Nation 450: Includes 450 Anytime Minutes and 5,000 Night & Weekend Minutes for $69.99 a month.

All AT&T Nation and AT&T FamilyTalk plans for iPhone 3G include nationwide long distance and roaming, Visual Voicemail, Rollover, unlimited Mobile to Mobile calling, Call Forwarding, Call Waiting, Three-Way Calling and Caller ID.

AT&T will offer FamilyTalk plans, with bundled voice and unlimited data, starting as low as $129.99 a month for two iPhone 3G lines. Up to three additional iPhone lines can be added for $39.99 each.

Unlimited text messaging can be added for an additional $20 ($30 for FamilyTalk plans of up to five lines); $15 (1,500 messages), or $5 (200 messages).

Business customers interested in iPhone 3G should contact an AT&T business sales representative or review their account information online to determine their eligibility for upgrade pricing. Corporate e-mail and other business applications require the Enterprise Data Plan for iPhone, which is $45 a month and bundled with an eligible voice plan. Small business customers may qualify for AT&T BusinessTalk, the industry’s only shared plan specifically for small businesses. Telstra and Apple to bring iPhone 3G to Australia on July 11

Telstra and Apple today announced that the iPhone 3G will be available to Telstra’s Australian customers on July 11. iPhone 3G will be available from Telstra on July 11 with a range of specially designed Next G iPhone 3G plans that meet the needs of any customer. The Next G iPhone 3G plans start at $30 per month with an upfront cost of $279 for the 8GB model and $399 for the 16GB model. Customers will receive the 8GB iPhone 3G model at no cost with the $80 plan and either the 8GB or the 16GB model at no cost with plans starting at $100 per month. All plans include free Wi-Fi access at Telstra hotspots and require a 24-month contract.

Customers can find further information and register their interest in iPhone 3G by visiting a nearby Telstra Shop, calling 1800iPhone or going to www.telstra.com/iphone.

Rogers Announces Price Packages for Apple iPhone 3G

Rogers Wireless announced a variety of voice and data pricing plans for the Apple iPhone 3G set to hit stores on Friday, July 11. With monthly plans starting at $60 for voice and data combined, all price plans require a three-year contract. With the cheapest $60 plan you will get 150 voice minutes plus unlimited weekend and evening talk time, as well as a 400MB data transfer limit. These isn’t unlimited data transfer plan though, the most expensive plan will cost you $115 a month and it only comes with a 2GB data transfer package.

Pricing includes unlimited Wi-Fi access at all Rogers and Fido Hotspots. Rogers Wireless will also offer two voice value packs for popular wireless features: a $15 monthly value pack including Caller ID, Who Called, Caller Ring Trax, 2,500 Sent Text Messages and 2,500 Call Forwarding Minutes; and a $20 monthly value pack including Caller ID, Who Called, Caller Ring Trax, 10,000 Sent Text Messages and 6:00 p.m. Early Evening Calling and 2,500 Call Forwarding Minutes.

SoftBank Mobile Announces iPhone 3G Service Price Plans

SoftBank Mobile in Japan will start selling the iPhone 3G from from July 11, 2008 (Friday), according to the company announcement yesterday. It has also announced the applicable price plan. The iPhone 3G will be available at 23,040 yen (215 USD) for the 8GB model and 34,560 yen for the 16GB model.

The price plan provided for iPhone 3G will be ‘White Plan’. It offers free domestic voice calls between SoftBank handsets from 1:00 to 21:00 and a SoftBank original mail service with receipt notification ‘Email’ for free. Other basic price plans such as the ‘Blue Plan’ (12 in total) and the ‘Orange Plan’ (10 in total) will also be offered in order to enable customers to subscribe to their preferred price plan.

A new service – ‘Packet Flat-rate Full’ (5,985 yen/month) – enabling customers full access to web browsing, video and map services regardless of the communication charges will be introduced. In addition to the basic price plan iPhone 3G users will be required to subscribe to ‘Packet Flat-rate Full’ and ‘S! Basic Pack’ (315 yen/month).

In summary, a white plan subscriber will have to pay 980 yen (White Plan Basic) + 5,985 yen (Packet Flat-rate Full) + 315 yen (Basic Pack), which is a total of 7,280 yen (67 USD) a month. Doesn’t sound cheap at all!

Several hands-on iPhone 3G reports from after the WWDC 2008 Keynote are out, and as you might expect they’re all saying pretty much the same thing. Despite the few extra millimeters thickness over the old iPhone, Apple’s newly slimmed edges disguise it well and the plastic – which is a concession to the numerous wireless radios packed inside – feels reasonable, though some question how scratch-resistant it will prove. Apple are claiming it’ll disguise wear better than the original. The buttons have been switched to metal for aesthetic, not practical reasons, and are sharper-edged. A few people have suggested that the new, white 16GB handset is particularly feminine, though that’s more personal choice than anything else.
