Seems the idea to improve the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) or 3G/W-CDMA mobile phone standard by next generation mobile broadband called LTE will come to the reality soon. One successful test indicates that.
T-Mobile has successfully trialed a LTE based network in Germany in a live environment. In the trial, data was transmitted to and from a vehicle driving in Bonn between Deutsche Telekom’s headquarters on the left side of the river Rhine and the T-Mobile headquarters on the river’s right bank.
On the four-kilometer test track data transmission went smoothly without interruptions and without loss of quality even across different cells – one of the most important prerequisites for qualification as a mobile communications network of the future.
LTE (Long Term Evolution) is the next major step in mobile radio communications, and will be introduced in 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 8. 3GPP Release 8 is planned to be ratified as a standard in December 2008.
The goals for LTE include improving spectral efficiency, lowering costs, improving services, making use of new spectrum and refarmed spectrum opportunities, and better integration with other open standards.
