Motorola Droid 2.1 Update Outlined by Verizon Wireless

It looks like we are one gigantic step closer to seeing an official update to Android 2.1 (Eclair) to the Motorola Droid. That’s right, and this isn’t just coming from some random “I overheard…” story, either. Nope. This is direct from Verizon Wireless, as they let us know just what it is exactly we should expect when the update starts to roll out. It goes into detail about all the features we’ve been dying for, but there’s one glaring thing missing: a release date.

The pamphlet hit Verizon Wireless’ website this afternoon, and it does indeed elaborate the details regarding the official update to Android’s latest version of its mobile Operating System. 2.1, or Eclair, has been the envy of every Android-powered device owner out there, ever since the Nexus One was unveiled back in January. Well, now it’s mid-March, and it seems that Verizon is ready to pull the trigger on releasing the final build of the update.

Here’s the breakdown of what you should expect:

  • Pinch-to-Zoom multitouch capabilities now available in the browser, Gallery, and Google Maps
  • Google’s News and Weather application is bundled as well, including the wonderful widget
  • Voice-to-Text entry throughout the device, for all text fields
  • Gallery is getting upgraded to the 3D Gallery
  • Live Wallpapers will be officially supported
  • Yahoo! Mail is now supported the device natively
  • Updates to Google Maps, which includes a “Night Viewing” mode
  • Improved pattern-lock functionality
  • Improves the handsets audio quality if you disconnect a wired headset from the Droid
  • And, finally, email accounts no longer have to be re-entered after an OTA update

There you have it, ladies and gentlemen. No reason to keep speculating on what feature the Droid will be getting when it finally gets updated. Verizon has officially laid it out, in bold letters for you. Now, we just have to wait and see what the thing will finally show up. If you’ve already received it, please let us know!
