China United Communications Corp. (China Unicom) recently launched W-CDMA 3G trial services in Baoding City in northern China’s Hebei Province, where China Mobile also set its TD-SCDMA trial.
Baoding is located around 140 kilometres south of Beijing. It covers an area of 40,000 sq. kilometers, with a population of 11 million. One third of its territory lies in the Taihang Mountains in the west, one third lies in the eastern plain area, the other third in the hilly land in between.
China Unicom has 129.46 million subscriber base for its GSM services, up from 128.55 million at the end of July. As of the end of April 2008, the company had 43 million CDMA subscribers.
