BlackBerry Widgets Coming in the Near Future?

We are of the mind that Research In Motion is one of the best mobile phone companies on the planet. They’ve given us so many great handsets in the BlackBerry line-up, that it’s hard to think that the company is in need of any kind of change. Don’t fix what’s not broken, right? Unfortunately, the mass market probably doesn’t agree with us so much, because we have a world of iPhones and Android devices, where customizable, pretty screens with all sorts of cool icons and widgets are the norm. Is RIM finally making the plunge?

These screenshots look about as Beta as we’ve ever seen. While we can safely say that something of this sort could easily be photoshopped, we’re hoping that someone who is doing a photoshop of an upcoming mobile Operating System wouldn’t want to put the “Snooze” option over another element of the OS. Of course, stranger things have happened, so maybe the owner just wanted to make it look like it was a Beta software.

While we’re fans of widgets, we’re wondering if a BlackBerry device would really prosper from the User Interface elements. BlackBerry devices have a good thing going for them, truth be told, so the addition of widgets may alienate a lot of their customers. Or, it could shepherd the company into a brand new era, where they’re taken in by a lot of new customers. Who knows. Let’s just hope all these rumors about the screenshots above being fake aren’t true, and that we can expect something like this from BackBerry OS 6.0 soon. Maybe on this BlackBerry “T” device we’re hearing so much about.
