Windows Phone Marketplace has ‘Nokia Collection’ section now

Windows Phone Marketplace is rolling out a Nokia-only section, dedicated to owners of Nokia’s Lumia devices. First spotted in France by Professor Thibault, The Verge reported, but one of the site’s readers commented that he/she already noticed this a few months ago.

It’s said the Nokia section has five apps: Nokia Maps, Contact Transfer, WRC Live, TuneIn Radio and App Highlights.

Windows Phone Marketplace hits 50,000 apps

Windows Phone reached a key milestone this week. Microsoft’s Windows Marketplace now has more than 50,000 apps. Of these, 17,276 were added in the last 90 days and 8,010 were added in the last 30 days, All About Windows Phone reports.

Though still far behind iOS and Android in terms of number of apps, it seems that Windows Phone is trying to catch up their rivals. For instance, Windows Phone just took 14 months to reach 50,000 apps, while Android took 19 months and iOS took 12 months to cross 50,000 apps mark, concludes eWeek.

3.7 million Android devices activated on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

Senior Vice President of Mobile at Google Andy Rubin just tweeted that at least 3.7 million Android devices were activated on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Compare that another the Android chief’s tweet a few months ago, telling us that there are over 500,000 Android devices activated every day — it means 1 million device activations on an average two day period.

From another stats, Mobile analytics firm Flurry says, the number of Android devices activated on Christmas Day jumped 353 percent from the first 20 days of December.

LG Fantasy leaked, coming Q1 2012

First leaked in July by Pocketnow, the rendering image of the Windows Phone 7 Mango-powered LG Fantasy now has some live photos, thanks to “a tester developer in Romania.” The phone, coming up with a 4 inch IPS display and a 5MP or 8MP camera, should be released in the first quarter of 2012.

Unfortunately there are no further details on handset’s specs.

LG itself has already introduced a Mango phone in October: the LG E906 Jil Sander, a slightly tweaked LG Optimus 7.

British Library launches smartphone app

The British Library just launched its first smartphone app called the Treasures. The app is available across multiple mobile platforms including iPhone, Android and iPad, providing an in-depth multimedia experience including over 100 of the library’s greatest collection items.

This includes handwritten lyrics by the Beatles, the first edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the world’s oldest bible Codex Sinaiticus, Galileo’s letters and Leonardo Da Vinci’s notebooks.

Created in conjunction with Toura, Treasures is available in the iTunes App Store and in the Android Marketplace for $3.99.

BlackBerry 6.1 platform announced at DevCon Asia, Bali!

RIM announced new BlackBerry 6.1 Application Platform for BlackBerry Smartphones on the BlackBerry Developer Conference Asia in Bali, Indonesia, today. According to Tyler Lessard, VP of Global Alliances and Developer Relations for RIM, the new tools/APIs include digital compass APIs, Open GL-ES 2.0, Window API and event-based geo-fencing location APIs.

Designed for BlackBerry developers or partners in Asia, the BlackBerry Devcon Asia is now the largest all-development conference outside of North America.

Evernote for Windows Phone 7 coming this winter

The popular note-taking application is finally coming to Windows Phone 7 this winter, according to WPCentral. This app allows you to take photos, save webpages or webpage excerpt, a voice memo, or a handwritten “ink” note.

Foxconn to make smartphones for Vizio

Taiwanese company Foxconn Electronics has landed OEM orders of smartphones [and tablets] for flat-screen TV maker Vizio, the Digi Times reports. Vizio plans to showcase its 4-inch smartphone called the Via Phone and the 8-inch tablet PC called the Via Tablet, at the upcoming CES in Las Vegas. Both devices will run Google’s Android operating system.

Via Phone will have a pair of cameras (one on the front and the back). Vizio will tie its new mobile device into their Via Plus internet service. For the time beeing, there is no further info about their carrier partner for this service.

Foxconn is the world’s largest maker of electronic components, they got some renowned product manufacturing contracts include the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

Motorola becomes two companies

Starting today, Motorola Inc will change its name to Motorola Solutions Inc (MSI) and will have a newly spun-off company called Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc (MMI). It means the current Motorola stock ticker (MOT) will be replaced by MSI and MMI.

Motorola Mobility Holdings will get the company’s smartphone business. The handset division that becomes MMH on Tuesday enjoyed a successful year in 2010 thanks to sales of Motorola’s Android-powered smartphones. The rest of the company (the business mobile and network divisions) will comprise Motorola Solutions and will trade on the NYSE as MSI.
