Announced at the Apple’s Let’s Rock event in San Francisco, iPhone users will be getting new firmware 2.1 for both iPhone and iPhone 3G, as well as the iPod Touch. Detail change log is not available, but Jobs is calling this a “big update”.

The new firmware 2.1 will improve the iPhone battery life, reduce application crashes and dropped calls. You will be able to backup your files in shorter time too after the upgrade.
