Android phone presales stronger than expected: T-Mobile

T-Mobile revealed that pre-orders for HTC G1 has been three times greater than it expected. As a result, it won’t promise to ship any more phones in time for the Oct. 22 launch.

The device will be available at select T-Mobile retail stores and online in the U.S. beginning Oct. 22, for a price of $179 with a two-year voice and data agreement. The phone will also be available in the United Kingdom beginning in November, and across Europe in the first quarter of 2009. Countries include Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and the Netherlands.

The operator didn’t disclose how many devices it has sold, so it’s not clear that this is evidence of overwhelming demand for the G1, the first phone to run Google’s Android software. The news follows reports last week that some customers trying to preorder a G1 were told there were none left. At the time, T-Mobile said there were still a limited number available.

Does it means G1 not so ready to the launch, so that unable to anticipate their stocks?
