Sun will ship a Linux- and Java-based operating system software for mobile phones. It's a good news for content creators. Sun will ship a "pre-integrated," GPL-licensable, Linux- and Java-based operating system software reference design for mobile phones. JavaFX Mobile can use Java for almost everything. It's much better than most Java-enabled phones, which typically rely on the language merely to provide a secure, managed sandbox for user-installed applications.
According to Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz, it's a software product that allows any consumer electronics manufacturer to accelerate the delivery of Java/Linux based devices, from phones to set tops and dashboards and everything else imaginable. "Without fear of format lock-in or disintermediation from a competitor," he said in his blog. The news follows Sun's recent acquisition of SavaJe, and Sun confirmed that Java applications developed by SavaJe for that company's pure-Java mobile phone operating system stack will be integrated into JavaFX Mobile. |
