Features include new VPN support, video capturing and playback.

LinuxDevices.com reported new details on the Motorola A768 Linux-based smartphone. ? The A768 is targeted towards a vertical market consisting of enterprise customers. ? Mobile warriors can access data via VPN support to check Email, browse the WEB, and review PDF documents or other Microsoft Office files.

"We launched A760 in China last fall and are able to now follow up quickly with the A768," said Samuel Li, director, Product Line Management, GSM High Tier Smartphone Product Group, Motorola Personal Communications Sector.

In their recently published research report "Defining the Market for Full-Featured Handsets," the Zelos Group stated: "While Symbian will be the market share leader in the next 24 to 36 months, Linux will threaten for long-term dominance. ? Linux leads other platforms in openness and low cost ? factors that are essentials to success in a market defined by tight margins, rapid innovation, and standards adherence."

 "Handset manufacturers, such as Motorola, are turning to the fast emerging mobile Linux OS as a platform for phone development because of the flexibility, control, and innovation offered by open source software," commented MontaVista CEO Jim Ready.

The Motorola A768 is sure to be a hit, with other features such as full video services capabilities such as video capturing, playback, and download through GPRS/CSD .

Business-oriented features include:

  • IPSec VPN client to provide secure wireless access to corporate networks
  • Compatibility with Microsoft Office documents including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • 96MB of system memory with 5 hours of voice record dictation capability
  • Embedded browser and email
  • Enterprise-class embedded database to rapidly store and retrieve data
  • Voice navigation
  • Intelligent handwriting input
  • HTML browser with zoom in and zoom out capability

The Motorola's A768 smartphone is available through China 's leading domestic operator, China Mobile .
