TU Media in Korea starts to beam the signal of satellite digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) to mobile phones for the first time in the world today. After 2 weeks of the launch, over 20,000 customers has bought a DMB mobile phone and signed up the broadcast services
TU Media president Suh Young-kil, left, turns a switch to send a satellite multimedia broadcasting (DMB) signal to cell phones at the company’s DMB station in Seoul, Sunday. TU Media, a unit of Korea’s foremost mobile operator SK Telecom, now runs seven satellite DMB video channels, news, sports, soap operas, games, movies, and the firm’s own station, plus 20 audio channels. The monthly subscription charge is 13 USD. TU Media is targeting 600,000 to 700,000 customers by the end of this year and expects to break even when it gathers about 5.5 million customers, which it predicts to be four to five years from now.
