Hot on the heels of Sprint's Treo 700p plans, Verizon Wireless announced their own plans for the 700p. The new Treo, which is Palm's first PalmOS-based smartphone with EV-DO wireless broadband capability, also features improved multimedia support over older Treo smartphones to allow for faster Internet video and audio enjoyment.
Verizon plans to utilize every feature on the new Treo with their new voice and data plans, selling the new 700p alongside its cousin, the Windows Mobile-based 700w. This ensures that affordable, reliable smartphones are available to everyone, no matter what their data requirements might be. Promising that the new unit would be available within the next few weeks, Verizon's Treo 700p plans will cost $400 with a two-year contract, and will offer two voice and data plans to back the unit up, with all three plans offering unlimited BroadbandAccess usage and unlimited data usage. The first will cost $79.99 per month and includes 450 minutes, unlimited In calling, and unlimited nights and weekends. For $109.99 per month, customers will get 1350 minutes, unlimited In calling, and unlimited nights and weekends. Finally, for $169.99 per month, customers will be given 4000 minutes, unlimited In calling, and unlimited nights and weekends. For Dial-Up Networking (using the Treo 700p as a wireless broadband modem), customers with the 700p, an unlimited data plan, and a qualifying voice plan can get BroadbandAccess Connect for $15 per month; without the voice plan, it will cost $30 per month. These offerings compare favorably with Sprint's previously-announced plans. Sprint's Treo 700p will cost $550 with a one year plan and $500 with a two year plan when they launch the phone at the end of the month; there's also an additional $100 credit given upon purchasing the two-year contract, but this is only given when the 700p is activated and the $500 must be paid in full beforehand. On the other hand, Sprint offers the Treo for less per month than Verizon; Verizon's cheapest plans together will cost $95/month for voice, data, and dial-up networking access, while Sprint's cheapest plans will cost $85/month. Lastly, while Verizon's plans are more expensive, they also offer more than double the amount of minutes (200 vs. 450). So the plans, in all actuality, are pretty close, and it really comes down to which company you're most comfortable with. |
