Mobile content delivery pioneer Mobileplay today announced the launch of its free, advertising-supported service for wireless devices, including PDAs, smartphones, BlackBerries and Java-enabled cell phones. Wireless users will now be able to access free news, games, lifestyle content and location-based services from a single portal specifically designed for their mobile devices.
Mobile phone users simply download the free application at mobileplay.com to receive instant access to Mobileplay's portfolio of content–from trivia games to the day's news at USA TODAY to movie times from CinemaSource or satire from The Onion. BlackBerries, Treos, Windows Mobile Devices and more than 80 Java-enabled phones from such manufacturers as Nokia, Motorola, LG and Sanyo can access Mobileplay's services. "We want to make it fun and easy for wireless users to access and share their favorite content," said James Ryan, CEO and founder of Mobileplay. "Whatever the consumer desires–from news, weather, trivia and movie listings to restaurant reviews, recipes, and blogs–our application will provide it for them–quickly, easily and for free." Mobileplay's content is free to consumers via an advertising-supported model. Mobileplay also develops custom "advergames" and "adverapps" for advertisers. These offerings provide advertisers with innovative ways to reach their customers on wireless devices, and also provide major media companies with a proprietary advertising network for generating revenue when delivering mobile content. Mobileplay's application, which on most devices requires a wireless data plan, allows consumers to navigate through and view content without having to type a lengthy URL or wait for pages to load in a WAP browser. Mobile phone users can instead download several articles at once, which are then cached on the device for easy reading and are available for sharing with friends. Advertising content is downloaded separately and served up locally from the phone to conserve bandwidth and reduce the cost of delivery.
