Omron announced that OKAO Vision face recognition sensor is being developed to provide face recognition security on mobile phone.

At the mean time, it is impossible for a mobile phone to do face recognition because it needs big memory and complex processing. Omron able to use their own algorithm to accelerate the process while maintaining high accuracy.

Before you use the mobile phone, you would need to face to the camera and press the security button/camera shot button. The system will then compare your face with the registered data. The whole process, is claimed to be completed in 1 second.

In the future, it can be used for other authorization functions like emailing and cash transaction

Advantages of this system

  1. If it is a camera phone, not additional hardware is required
  2. It takes only 1 second to complete the face recognition
  3. Need not to fix position when you face the camera

Specifications

  1. Up to 99% success rate (Base on Omron evaluation)
  2. Memory use: ROM450KB and RAM370KB
  3. Each registered data is 1.5 KB
  4. 1 second to complete the recognition
  5. Supported OS: Symbian OS, BREW, installation Linux
