Motorola MPx220 is coming soon! Contrary to the webmasters of MSMOBILES, this is not an anonymous posting, and is no longer just a rumour.

 Further communication with our Motorola contacts has confirmed that the Motorola MPx220 Smartphone will be available at the end of March 2004.  Also, it will be debuting on the T-mobile USA network, not ATT Wireless[who will be deploying another Smartphone model in Q2 2004].  As for the people that have been combing the FCC site in the USA for this model, they are missing an important distinction that was revealed by our Motorola sources:

As they put it, FCC postings/testing are really for NEW models that are debuting for use in the USA, NOT for UPGRADED systems.  This is the key point.  Since it is an upgrade, hence the use of the MPx 200 series moniker, as opposed to an MPx100 or MPx300 series(which are new models), it does NOT have to be posted on the FCC website.  From this perspective, it has already been posted once.  This was news to us as well, but apparently this is how they are getting around the posting requirement, according to Motorola.  We were unaware of this, but this is not the only reliable source that has confirmed this for us, so we consider this very reliable information at this point.  Also, we confirmed that the MPx200 model will have an upgrade to Smartphone 2003 released from Motorola.  The one caveat given was that while Motorola will release it, it will be up to the carriers to release it to their customers after customizing for their branded units.  This means that it might be released by Orange in the Europe, but not by ATT Wireless in the USA, or vice versa.  Time will tell on this, but it is scheduled to be released by one or more carriers at the beginning of Q2 2004 as well.
