UPDATE: T-Mobile replied to us, here's what they say, keep this in mind. From T-Mobile support: Removing apps will in some cases improve performance and stability, however, T-Mobile does not recommend completely removing the apps as this will affect EONS as well as roaming indicators (customers will not know they're roaming while in California). Before we get started we should say that unless you're a pretty savy user, this might not be for you. We're basically going to show you how to remove some of the applications that came with your T-Mobile phone- for some folks, these have caused crashes and freezes. If you don't have any problems, don't do this. And of course, do this at your own risk, perform back ups, blah blah...The built in T-Mobile applications on your Pocket PC Phone seem like a good idea, we think they do more harm than good for some users. The Pocket PC Phone is AMAZING, it's THE best phone / PDA on the market and we love T-Mobile for launching it, but these apps that T-Mobile created (not from Microsoft) are a little on the buggy-resource hog side to put it simply. After 3 months of answering hundreds of questions in the Pocket PC Phone newsgroups and conducting our own research, those T-Mobile apps gotta' go. What will you gain? 3-5 MBs of program memory AND a more stable Pocket PC Phone. Before you get started, tap Start > Settings > Tap the System tab, and tap Memory, note the Program memory, after we're done, you'll see a big difference without the built in T-Mobile apps. What are the built in T-Mobile applications? T-Mobile Today Screen The T-Mobile Today Screen is a Today Screen plugin which allows one tap access to the call log and voicemail. Kinda handy, but not really needed, takes up valuable resources and for some causes crashes. When you get voice mail, you get an SMS message, and when you need to view the call log, you can tap the phone button and tap call log, so if you remove T-Mobile application, you're not really missing out on anything.
Other Today Screen and "extra" Tray applications SMS-The SMS application is kinda cool, it's a quick and easy way to send SMS messages. But, you can do that with the Inbox. IE-This is a link to IE, um-- you can tap Start > Internet Explorer Power-Displays the power of the device. You can use one a million better 3rd party apps, or tap Start > Settings > System > Power. T-Mobile Links-These are links to applications, kinda useless, all these things are accessible from the Start menu.
Removing them When we say "removing them" that's actually not true, we're simply disabling them, and if you ever want the applications back, you can simply hard reset the device and they're be restored. Or if you have a backup, restore from that as well. To remove the applications we're going to disable the Today screen application as well as removing 1 shortcut in the start up folder in the Windows directory, nothing too complicated. Removing the Today Screen application This is really simple. Tap Start > Settings > Today, tap the Items tab and UNCHECK the T-Mobile application. Tap Start > Today and now it's gone.
Removing all those other apps The good news is that by simply removing one shortcut in one folder you can get rid of all the T-Mobile application in one swoop. The bad news, we kinda wish we could keep the SMS one, but it doesn't matter, we use the Inbox to send and receive SMS messages just fine. Tap Start > Programs > File Explorer, then tap My Device > Windows > Start Up and press and hold the file "Battery Monitor" when the menu appears tap delete. If you'd like you can tap cut and move it to another folder if you want to move it back later.
Now, soft reset the device (press the stylus in the hole under the green phone button on the bottom of the device). After your device starts up tap Start > Settings > tap the System tab, then tap the Memory icon. You'll notice that you have more memory and in the next few days you'll most likely notice most of your issues go away if you had any. Here's our memory before and after.
We hope this helps some folks out there. |
