As you can observe above although the term "smartphone" is generic and covers both "Microsoft Smartphone" and "Pocket PC phone", usually it is used however in the meaning of "Microsoft smartphone" only, similarly like when you say "Windows" you mean the Microsoft´s operating system and not the glass-filled holes in your house.
On the other hand some may ask which one is better for me: "Microsoft Smartphone" or "Pocket PC phone"? Well, the answer is simple: if you are a PDA owner then you must ask yourself if you like "2 body solution" or "one body solution". In the first case buy MS Smartphone and in the second buy Pocket PC phone. Othwerise, if you are not a PDA owner, then go for Microsoft smartphone.
What Can It Do
Lots. These smartphones are pocket computers, that have just as much power as the early Pentium PC´s that were dream machines just five years ago. Since all Microsoft powered cellphones have SD card slot, you´ve got storage memory from 32 MB, all the way up to 1GB with current SD cards (2GB SD card will be available in the year 2004). Size of applications varies and depends on type: small utilities are of size around 100 KB but games and reference works can have several MB. Although internal memory is not so big (about 10 MB for MS Smartphones and 64 MB for Pocket PC phones), thanks to existence of SD card slot you have practically no limits on number of applications you can install.
What Are Good Applications To Start With - Microsoft Smartphone : the "must have" applications are free: task manager (you have to kill applications running in background to save the battery), file explorer and notepad - all freeware for Microsoft smartphone can be found here ; the best place to buy commercial applications for Microsoft smartphones is Smartphone.NET (developers get biggest % of your money); another place to get applications for Microsoft smartphones is Handango ; please note: both Smartphone.NET and Handango offer also ability to upload and download free software
- Pocket PC phone : since Pocket PC already has more applications pre-installed in standard package (more than MS Smartphone), then usually you don´t need to install anything to use many interesting features, but the best place to buy commercial applications (or to find freeware) for Pocket PC is PocketGear.com (developers get biggest % of your money); another place to get applications for Pocket PC is Handango ; please note: both PocketGear.com and Handango offer also ability to upload and download free software
