Sony Ericsson confirmed that two of its cell phones and three Ericsson handsets are vulnerable to a attacks by hackers.

Sony Ericsson T610 and T68i handsets as well as the T39, R520 and T68 models are open to allow an attacker to read, modify and copy a phone's contacts book, calendar and other data without requiring the victim's device to "pair" with another Bluetooth device.

How to protect yourself of being a victim:

  • Make sure that you have the latest software: Check which version of the software by typing >*<<*<* from the standby screen (the chevrons indicate left and right movements of the mouse button on the phone) and then selecting "ServiceInfo/SW" then "Information" from the menus.
  • If you have the software version R1A081, contact an authorized Sony Ericsson service center to get the phone upgraded.
  • Additionally, Sony Ericsson suggests setting the  Bluetooth to hide, or simply turn off Bluetooth when it is not being used, as a "preventative action."

The problem was fixed in handsets shipped starting today.

It is still unknown if the security flaw exists in the actual Bluetooth standard or in the handset manufacturers' implementation of it.
