Openwave Systems announced that Vodafone Italy will extend its deployment of Openwave products and solutions to include its Security Suite for Mobile Anti-Virus, a key component of Openwave's Mobile Edge content delivery framework announced earlier this year.
As we enter the converged marketplace, customers are increasingly impacted by viruses on their mobile device which can be more problematic than those on a PC. Difficult to remove and expensive, users pay for SMS or MMS messages generated by malicious viruses, creating difficulties between the operator, their subscriber, and even inter-operator. Openwave's Security Suite features a secure content management (SCM) server and tools to help Vodafone Italy provide mobile data access safely and securely. The SCM server is designed to offer a flexible framework that can rapidly adapt as security threats and operator needs evolve. "This partnership with Openwave demonstrates McAfee's commitment to providing multi-layered, mobile-specific protection across a variety of key protocols, and ensure customers like Vodafone can continue to provide cutting edge solutions for their subscribers in a safe environment," said Todd Gebhart, senior vice president of worldwide consumer and mobile sales, McAfee, Inc. While other solutions feature a PC-based filter applied in a mobile environment, Openwave's Security Suite is a true mobile anti-virus solution, and comes with the dedicated support of McAfee's Avert Lab which is tasked with tracking and profiling mobile-specific viruses and threats. "Openwave Mobile Edge Security Suite is designed specifically to address the unique needs of mobile operators and their subscribers," said Nara Rajagopalan, head of the Mobile Edge business unit, Openwave. "By choosing to broaden their offering with Openwave, Vodafone Italy is enabling both access to mobile content as well as helping to ensure the safety and security of their mobile device portfolio." The Mobile Edge Security Suite and Vodafone's existing deployment of Openwave Mobile Access Gateway (MAG) were easily integrated, offering the added benefit of rapid time to market, low latency and lower integration costs.
