Taipei to Make VoIP Available for the Whole City

Taipei city expects to have 200,000 people using wireless Internet phones by the end of this year, providing a much cheaper alternative to the traditional mobile.

The WiFi network is now covering up to 90% of the area in Taipei city. The government plan to develop in VoIP call services through the wireless network. Dual mode Skype/SIP VoIP phone will be available soon to let users making calls through different system. "This is the world's first Internet phone system using the whole city, rather than a spot, as a wireless operation environment," said Daniel Wongg, spokesman for the Taipei Computer Association.

Companies are presenting their VoIP mobile phone during an event today, these including,

The UTStarcom F1000G is a candy bar phone with monochromn display screen. It support SIP protocol and WEP/WPA encryption method.

UTStarcom F3000 is a flip phone. Similar to F1000G it support only the SIP protocol. Other than VoIP calls, you can utilize its email client to send/receive emails via the wireless connection. The F3000 has a 64k colors display screen.

The D-Link DPH-540/541 are two similar wireless VoIP phones which support SIP protocal. Working together with Teltel VoIP Service company, it has built in Teltel software to make low cost VoIP calls.

Another offering from D-Link, the DPH-C160T dect phone. The C160T not only connects to traditional telephone line but also to wireless network to make VoIP calls. When VoIP call service is needed, you can activate it by pressing the VoIP call button.

The SS28S is a wireless VoIP phone which support both SIP protocol and Skype.
