Private users want to use all their end devices with the services they know from their mobile phone or their PC, for example. That is why Siemens will introduce in the second half of 2006 cordless phones and gateways, which will support new functions such as a network-based address directory, Voice over IP and push to talk. These value added services are provided via the innovative IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), which is being implemented in many carriers' networks. Siemens is currently already conducting field trials with IMS-capable cordless devices.
This solution enables wireline carriers to offer their customers a greater range of services and increase customer satisfaction at the cost of a small implementation investment. The IMS-based approach minimizes the changes to the network infrastructure necessary for integrating new applications and thus implementation costs and the time required to launch products. Field trials currently being conducted with prototypes are aimed at optimizing functions and services for users’ needs. Products that are ready for series production – cordless phones, devices and USB adapters – will be available in the second half of 2006. "By introducing IMS-capable end devices for home use, we will establish ourselves in this innovative market segment and take a further step toward the convergence of fixed and mobile applications," said Martin Kinne, Chief Executive Officer of Siemens Home and Office Communication Devices. "Together with Siemens Communications, we can thus offer wireline carriers an end-to-end solution for IMS." In implementing IMS services for end devices and network infrastructures, Siemens is relying on standards defined by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA). This ensures compatibility with other standards-compliant network components from other vendors. |

Siemens Home and Office Communication Devices wants to ensure a seamless transition between the different communications systems, as well as a range of services that users can access at all times. The implementation makes use of the IP Multimedia Subsystem, a platform for IP-based multimedia applications. This requires appropriate network technology, of course, but also the right end devices. That is why Siemens is implementing functions such as a network-based voice mailbox, presence management, instant messaging, Voice over IP and push to talk for end devices. With the new IMS-capable gateways, it will also be possible to set up a wireless Voice over IP network over which multiple users can share a single broadband line. The advantage for customers is clear: It lets them cut their telecommunications costs.
