Google gmail is letting US mobile phone users to sign up email account through SMS. Currently, they're only able to offer this promotion in the United States and are working hard to add more countries.

The downside is your phone number will be stored to make sure it is used to create no more than 10 accounts. More Google mobile services like secure password recovery and SMS alerts are being developed too.
