Yau Jia Xin, 9, underwent successful heart surgery today, thanks to the power of the short messaging service (SMS).

A family friend sent an SMS seeking O-negative type blood donors. Others forwarded the SMS. And someone answered the call. The message read: "Urgent! Child nine years old Yau Jia Xin needs O negative blood. Help me SMS as much as you can. God bless you. Thank you."

Eventually, those with the right blood type donated the three pints needed for her daughter’s surgery and it was performed this morning.
