4G mobile systems isn't expected to arrive in the market until year 2010, but Samsung is getting a head start by commiting an investment of about 10 trillion won in research for fourth-generation (4G) telecom technologies.
These figures are based on assumptions that Samsung’s telecom revenue will climb at the same pace until 2010, the firm’s 2004-2010 accumulated sales will surpass 300 trillion won and 4G research spending will exceed 10 trillion won. "We started 4G research last year in collaboration with domestic universities such as the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Seoul National University,’’ Lee said. It is predicted that through 4G technology, people will be able to enjoy location-based services, mobile shopping, e-mail and multimedia data transfer as well as video streaming via a handheld terminal at reasonable prices.
