The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) made a recommendation to have a standard to help mobile devices and smartphones tell web servers what capabilities they can handle. Is this good news for web developers and handheld users? The schema, the Composite Capability/Preference Profiles (CC/PP): Structure and Vocabularies 1.0 (CC/PP 1.0), is a system for expressing device features and user preferences using the Resource Description Framework (RDF), a spec that makes Web applications work with Web servers. CC//PP is being shepherded by a W3C working group that includes Ericsson, Nokia and Sun Microsystems. CC/PP is a framework allowing a device to communicate and identify itself to a server it's capabilities and preferences. For example, if a user is using a smartphone with a limited screen size and resolution, the server would know to deliver the requested content in detailed lists. Using actual descriptions would make it easier to use existing profiles to help devices and applications work together. Wide acceptance of this standard may likely increase sales of handheld devices. So we'll have to wait and see! Read the entire report article | source w3c |
